It really depends on the sound you hope to create. Depending on your experience level I could not imagine not owning both Gibson and Fender models. To me the Gibson Les Paul is Rock... The Fender has a cleaning sound and works better for Jazz or even County sounds. I have never owned an SG but I have played one a time or two over the years... good guitar but I like the Les Paul better... if you are a metal head then skip the Gibson and the Fender... ESP makes great Metal guitars as does Ibanez. I vote Gibson!

Strat over any gibson other then lespaul.
Gibson SG hands down! I love how the double cut away gives the guitar a kinda devil horn sort of look, plus its easier to move up the neck when soloing.

i prefer the fender, hmmmm funny you ask this cuz i just got a my guitar yesterday..... it was a fender :p.
Neither. I use a Voyager Arbor, but it doesn't work for crap on an amp, so I'll probably get a Gibson since the only thing I know that Fender has done is the Stratocaster and those just don't impress me.

I love guitars, and if you're talking electrics then.... Gibsons look good, they sound good, they're great, I have a Gibson 335, its beautiful, buts its only good for jazzy stuff. I also have a Telecastor, the tele wins because its a great all round guitar and can be used for any type of music, but Fenders are less of a single area market, more a whole spectrum, bunch of corporate bastards, but they got it pinned..... So go for a Gibson if you play one type of music and want to please the eyes of the crowd, but if you want a Guitar with soul that can do most music, that is Versatile, Fender all the way... Maybe someday they'll get it perfect, a guitar with the versatility of a fender, and the looks, presence and Mojo of a Gibson.... Someday...
both are good brand names but ive gota to give it to gibson they have more famous styles like the sg standard, les paul, flying v, explorer,thunderbird, etc
and fender has the telocaster, precision and startocaster but gibson has way more better guitars
