Answers: What does ROCK mean to you?

When and why did you start listening to ROCK ? What or what band caught your attention?

I began listening to rock when I was a child. Hell, I grew up with a father blasting Black Sabbath whenever he could. My whole family was like that. At first, I was apathetic towards it, always singing my own melodies (I tend to enjoy making my own stuff all the time)...but as time went on, I developed a liking toward music with loud guitars, strong, powerful vocals and lyrics that seemingly always spoke of Lucifer, death, pessimism, war, politics and emotions polar opposite of happiness & love.

Rock, to me, is freedom. I listen to it to "get away", to free myself from things going on in my life that cause me to "feel". It's like, my natural drug.

Music brings out the best of me. It puts me back on my feet when I'm falling down to my knees in frustration. Because I take comfort in listening to people express the same emotions I'm feeling. And the instrumental vibration flows through my body, taking me out of this place...this world. Even if it's just for 3 minutes, at least it's there.

Black Sabbath is my first and favorite rock band. Ozzy captivated me with his words when I was a kid, and even now. The lyrics were like a father to me, protective, comforting, empathetic, understanding. And the same applies to Floyd. They're also a band I admire, for their ability to free me from total devastation.

Thanks for the question...it really got a lot out of me. =)

The first band I really got into was actually Linkin Park many years ago. Their not my favorite band anymore but I still respect them.

paul mccartney caught me 7yrs ago!

This answer goes back literally a few decades in my case. :)

I think the group that 1st really opened my ears to rock/pop were The Monkees. Total made-for-tv band, but I loved all those reruns.

But then I discovered The Beatles.............

Rock means the world to me. I heard "We Are The Normal" by the Goo Goo Dolls (it's an AWESOME album from '93) in a chatroom when I was 11 and that changed everything.

I listen to rock because there's so many different types and each song means something different and not all of the songs have explicit meanings.

That was in 2006... I liked some rock before but now it's all I listen to.

R.O.C.K. means Rock Out Cause its Krazy

Blink 182 caught me since i was a kid. I found out that i lived near one of the lead singer's mom (tom) but they broke up and I still love rock lol

YEAH BEATLES!!! they are the number one rule in music.... everyone has to listen to them or else

Cause it ROCKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS....LOL!

The first band I ever liked was "Asia" and I still like them today. I was 17 when I first got into them, and into Rock.

I listen to it because I find the music that speaks to me the most in this genre.
It means everything to me...

I've been listening to Rock for a long time but it had always been the minority of the music I listened to. I've been a fan of Blondie in particular for /many/ years now - but the bulk of my music was still Pop, R&B or Grime.

It was when I heard Guns N' Roses that I fell in love with Rock music. They're the Rock band that really opened my mind to the various subgenres of Rock and got me into it properly..

ive been listening to rock since i began listening to music.. its way better than hipop, RnB n rap.. plus most rock songs have really good lyrics (in my case) and i luv listenin to music rellllli loud so listenin to heavy metal, gothic bands sounds relli good loud.. rock music is everything for me.. i cant go 1 day without it

I listen to rock, because it makes me want to move. It gets me hyped up and gets me off.

The first artist that ever caught my attention was Elvis Presley.

It has so much soul.

Then I started listening to James Brown. After that I started to turn a little to country. I dig the blues country sound. Well recently I listen to all music and I still love all forms of rock. From old school like Buddy Holly and Carl Perkins to Shadows Fall and Pantera.

As long as the band has real musical ability I usually like it. As a musician (trombone player) I discerning when it comes to music.

Before I listened to rock, the music I liked didn't connect with me. In my previous music taste, all they sang about was love and parties. And at that point in my life I didn't know a thing about love or parties. Then my brother introduced me to a little band called Pantera. I could connect with Walk because the song was about anger. Right about the time I started listening to the band, I was really ticked at the current music scene because all of the songs and bands were so fake. See? Lyrics have to connect to real people, not party animals and people that go through relationships like toilet paper! Two and a half years later, I'm listening to a wide varity of rock and I won't go back to pop ever again!

I started listening to rock maybe when i was 5 or 6 and I only listened to it then because my dad did. Whenever we were in the car with him it was rock. I didn't really appreciate the bands he had us listening to till 10 or so. And the band that turned me onto rock was AC/DC. Angus' guitar just made me love them. Then I explored into my dad's record collection found Pink Floyd, Led, Black Sabbath, The Who, The Doors...and then i also explored his cd collection found Pantera and fell in love with Cowboys from Hell and Walk. He noticed I was into all the bands he had cds of and noticed it was the awesome guitar that turned me on...had me listen to Guns N' Roses it was Sweet Child o' Mine and Night train that had me hooked. Now i have him hooked onto a7x.

I think Rock is whatever. It doesnt really have a deep meaning for me. Its like freedom or something else. Its everything. I cant explain it! LOL

I started listening to rock music when i was in 3rd grade. Blink 182 caught my attention. I really dont know why my parents allowed me to listen to their music but it was a lot fun though.

WHEN I WAS ABOUT 14 GUNS N ROSES

I've danced to rock since i could sit up
my parents are rock mad and i've been brought up like that
the red hot chili peppers are THE best band EVER!

because new country sucks,

i listen to it because it's the greatest thing around. i first started liking it around 7th grade because of the oldies. my first concert was shinedown and then 38special a couple of days after. that got me thinking "wow, this stuff is pretty good" a few months later, i saw the red hot chili peppers in concert, and that changed my life forever. now i'm in love with music and i'm learning the guitar.

i really started listening to rock in 2001...there are three bands that made love rock ...linkin park , staind and evanescence....
for LP it started with the "in the end" video...i liked the song ...but i quickly forgot about that band...then 2 or 3 years later my sister brought 2 cds full of LP songs...that's when i became a fan...
here are some of the songs that introduced me to that style...

staind " it's been a while "
evanescence" my immortal"
three days grace" i hate everything about you "
limp bizkit "my way "
creed" my sacrifice"
avril lavigne "i'm with you"

others bands/artists that i like ...

hoobastank
kelly clarkson
30 seconds to mars
coldplay
avril lavigne
flyleaf

why do i listen to rock ??? ...uh...because there are some amazing bands that play it !?...i guess it's because i like their songs ..

I remember hearing Led Zep ans a pre teen and was hooked. It was loud and aggressive and rebellious. Kind of like me!

Because it rocks and Ted Nugent and Kiss were the ones that caught my attention

i listen to rock coz its beta thn rap !!!

I can thank Nirvana and Led Zeppelin for getting me into listening to Rock Music. I don't know where I would be if those two bands never existed.

I listen to rock because I like the way the instruments sound together--and how complex/original a band can be with only a few instruments!

For me, rock is just a continuation of classical music. Completely different genres, but I find that the two are more alike than not. The instruments may be different, as are the sounds produced, but both speak to our basic, human emotions.

Probably one of the first rock groups I heard was the Rolling Stones (and around the same time, The Beatles) when I was really little...but Queen was the group that got me truly into the genre. From there, I branched out to other groups.

yes i love rock music and death metal i started listening to it when i started watching wrestling because they have a lot of rock and death metal song and the bands that caught my attention were papa roach, saliva, motorhead, union underground, and the best one which was Bullets and Octane

I don't really know why I listen to rock.
Maybe, its because I was introduced to Rock at such an early age and that's what I've been listening to my whole life. I've never really tried to listen to any other genre other then Rock sub-genres.
I don't remember what band caught my attention. I really don't!

I was born to ROCK and never ever stop
Ive been a Metal head since age 6 (woe ya ),,with out a doubt KISS was what happend to me

And when I picked up the gutiar I knew I was BORN TO PLAY IT LOUD

In the year 2001 I moved to Canada. Before then, I never really listened to music. When I came here, songs like "In The End" by LINKIN PARK were on the radio. I heard it once, and I got into them, and to this day they are my favourite band. I also used to like Nickelback, but I really don't care for them now. Then 2003 rolled around, and Three Days Grace released their self-titled, and that got me even more into rock. Evanescence's Fallen also came out that year, which again, got me into more types of rock. Of course Meteora came out then too, and to this day that is still my favourite album.

I also used to listen to bands like Matchbox Twenty. I loved their song "Disease" at one point. And I've noticed (and my contacts are now going to say 'here she goes again') that I not only have favourite songs, I have songs that I get totally obsessed with and I keep repeating them all day (now you see what I mean, contacts). So the first one of those was 'Disease', then it was Evanescence's 'My Last Breath', and then it was 'I Hate Everything About You', and then it was Disturbed's 'Down With The Sickness', and now it is 'Somewhere I Belong' by Linkin Park. So, as you can see my favourite song is not always by my favourite band...it is now, but not all the time, and also for a while I didn't have just one favourite band, like in '03 when I really liked all of 3DG, Ev, and LP. =]

And, in terms of listening to my parents' music, I don't. I'm Indian, as in India, as in 'brown'. I'm 1st generation North American, as is my brother. My parents listen to Carnatic music, which is Indian classical, but it's in languages I don't understand (I speak my mother-tounge - English isn't my first language - but I don't speak any other languages that those songs are written in). So, if I can't at all relate to the music, it's natural not to like it.

So that is why I listen to rock. Good q.

I listen to rock b/c, by default, its really the only genre that appeals to me. Country is too whiny. too sappy. Rap is just either degrading or uncreative.

The first few bands I listened to were Linkin Park, Green Day, and Blink 182. There was just something about them all individually that made me happy inside. Even though Linkin Park had mostly kind of sad lyrics, they present them in a unique way, a way that I respect, and to this day, they are my favorite band.

Blink 182 and to some extent (old, good) Green Day are/were both humorous, but in a creative way. But, when they wanted to, they could be the serious (Adam's Song, Stay Together for the Kids, or Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).

My musical taste has branched out a LOT since the early 2000s when I first found the beauty of rock music, but these three bands are what first tuned me into it, and I'm glad they did.

Sorry bout the long winded answer =)
