Irish Music- How do you tell the difference between a reel, slip jig, light jig,!

Question: I am taking dance classes and I cannot tell the differences when I try to classify my own music. I have a basic working knowledge of reading and counting music.

The real differences are in the time signature.

A slip jig will be in 9/8... it's a pretty distinct sound, and sometimes might sound a little off from what you are used to.

A regular jig is almost always in 6/8. If you want to pick this out, you might notice accent on the 1st and 4th beat. Whenever I am keeping time for a jig I always think "ONE-two-three FOUR-five-six"

And finally, a reel is usually in 4/4 or 2/4.

Hope that helps.

what the hell are you talking about
