Answers: I am talking about topics discussed in the lyrics.

Some people like politics in their songs, some people prefer love..

What do you like ?

three things come to mind:

1.) something that gives me pause, makes me think, introspect ...
2.) Something that just plain jams. Where I'm just sitting there listening to the band go, thinking "Damn!" ...
3.) Something that makes me laugh...

or any combination of the above.

Sex!!! It's universal!!!! LOL!!!!!

anything but love

Most of the songs I listen to deal with politics/war/nature/religion/fantasy

I also like some songs that have to do with love...(yes I have a sensitive side )

Honestly, I couldn't care less about the lyrics

If it has a good riff, that's all I care about.

But if anything, I like lyrics dealing with destruction amd how f--ked up this world has become with the majority and everything.

And I hate love songs.

I like interesting lyrics that obviously have something beyond just what they seem to be saying. I prefer topics that address many different issues. Love songs are too cliche, so if you decide to write one at least make it unique and completely different from every other one out there.

I like things in my songs that I can relate to. You know, something I can listen to and say " yeah .. this is like what happened" .. or "yeah. this is how I feel"
Music is my medicine. [:

ANYTHING but ex-girlfriends, there are too many of them!

I like really abstract themes that confuse me, LOL

I really do. I want something that i can sit there and interpret, something like this:
"In the rain in cellphane
Pale dogs and demigods
They won't bring me down
The clocks go round, they never stop"

Now isn't that fun to interpret? I want something that makes me think.... maybe something a bit philosphical, but something that i can link back to my own life or something relevent in today's society.

Er... maybe just cause I've been a poetry fanatic since I can remember...

Love is an overused topic in Rock and almost every other genre. So, I'd rather listen to anything that's not love! Its getting pretty annoying now!

I like any topic so long as the lyrics are well written. Diversity pwns!

I like a song written well enough to make you cry, to laugh out loud, to make you think.... (not necessarily at the same time though!)

You know, I always found lyrics themselves to be kind of an afterthought. A nice little bonus to grab onto later, but don't bear too heavily into my enjoyment of a song. I can appreciate good lyrics, but I usually don't figure it out until a little later. I suppose that's what makes me a bit unique in here on this topic.

With that said, in an afterthought sort of a way, I like when the subject matter lines up well with the vocalist. Malkmus is supposed to be lofty and ambiguous, Elliott Smith is bring his imagery and poetic side. Paul Simon is supposed to have that sort of hopefully hopeless thing, Albarn is supposed to be really satirical and schmarmy. I think the voice brings out the best in a voice. A flow that feeds both the content and the tone.

I don't want religion or politics in my music.

I like depressing love songs. most of the time.
otherwise... it depends on my mood

Emotion (not Emo). I don't care if it's anger or joy or a feeling of serenity, I want something that enables me to relate what the artist is emoting. I don't get these out of the lyrics. It occurs within the tone, the vibe of the song. It gets into your soul and affects you within. So much crap is mass marketed these days that have no soul to it. I find it little to ask for but hard to achieve.

The more esoteric the subject, the better I like the song. The reason I despise so much modern music is the bland uniformity of it's lyrics.

I like fantasy themed songs quite well..ex.."Holy Diver" etc.
