R&P : I hate to do this to you .... No. 2 ... ?!

Question: Why cannot bands come out with their music without having to worry about getting a label for their music?
There are too may R&P arguments about if a certain is 'Metal' or 'Punk'
If a band has different qualities to bands in the similar genre they are considered not 'metal enough' or 'not punk enough..'
or they killed punk or metal

Now the same people who argue about these stuff complain about the lack of original music nowadays..
How do they expect original music if they fall every band to fall under a certain category ?

Whats your say on all this?

I don't think trying to classify bands is wrong. I myself am not a fan of punk and cannot bear hearing anything punk in my music. And I do think there is a lack of original music nowadays, but I don't think this has anything to do with this labelling of bands.

I am always trying to figure out exactly what kind of music it is that I listen to, but I still absolutely love it. If I can say that one certain band is Melodic Death Metal and if I find that I like them, I say to myself, "Hmm... So I like Melodic Death Metal. I'm going to search for more music labelled that same way."

I do agree with you.

For whatever reason people are hell bent on having to clasify things. I suppose it's just our nature. We are more comfortable with the familliar than the unfamilliar.

I also think that people have created far too many sub-genres of music. Things get ridiculous. I can name at least 20 sub-genres of Punk which is already a sub-genre of Rock.

It's pretty ridiculous.

I absolutely agree with jeffo...above. I would add that some bands started in one genre and move slightly (or completely) into another and long time fans feel betrayed....which I sometimes understand, but on the other hand it comes down to are they still making good music, not what genre they chose to delve in. Take Corrosion of Conformity, I've listened to them since they first came out with Eye for an Eye, they were hardcore punk then, now they are considered 'southern metal'...quite a contrast....although what matters is every album (in my opinion) is great (not a big fan of their last one). So I guess what I'm saying is labeling music is not necessarily a bad thing, its when people are not open to 'quality' music in other genres that is bad. As for all the sub-genres.....of the 1000 or so that I know, I'm sure that there are 1000's more I have not heard of yet...some are necessary, some are just created in an attempt to distance themselves from what they really are influenced from, but don't want to be associated with (and couldn't succeed at it anyway).
