Guitarists in a band??!

Question: I know in bands their are lead and rhythm guitarists, but are there other types of guitarists? And what kind of guitarist does back up notes instead of chords like a rhythm guitarist does?

As far as a label goes...lead and rhythm are the most common...but that does not mean much, you can play whatever/however you want. As to your second part, you have to remember that when listening to a studio recording, the guitarist(s) can overdub anything they want to add to the song that they see necessary. Now when they play live they may not be able to duplicate that exact sound of which was done in the studio, so some parts will have to be left out or they will have a sample of the part playing to simulate it.

there's bass...?

some times theres 2 rhythm and one lead, the foo fighters is a good example of that.

some bands also have 2 bassist, one bassist playing the riffs on the deeper strings, and another playing the riffs on the higher strings if you know what i mean

Lead, rhythm, bass. Anything else is trying to be too artsy-fartsy for their own good or needs to get a new damn guitarist!

Really though, if you're listening to a recording, there could be MULTIPLE guitar tracks layered on top of one another. Rhythm guitarists can do leads counter to what the true "lead" is playing... don't know that there are really any specific titles for the musicians... but it's not uncommon to have a lead and a counter being played over top.

Confusing enough?

you can have as many guitarists as you want doing whatever you want
theres no rule to music
some bands have 3 guitarists... (radiohead does in some songs)
so pretty much just do whatever u want
in the end youre a guitarist... doesnt matter the name

unplugged is making that shiit up, no such thing as two bassists, and theres only four guys in the Foo, so unless they no longer employ the drums someones a little confused

Foo Fighters have actually got thier original guitarist who plays with them on tour so that does make them having 3 guitarist and bassist

2nd rythym, or 2nd lead which ever way you want to look at it.
