Prior to hard, something happens, as in hardwood prior to being hardwood starts as something else. A seed? A sapling? A softwood wanting to grow up? Right now it's hard to see and it's hard to figure and it's definitely hard to understand, but I do so love hardwoods. They burn better and last a whole lot longer!
