Dick Dale (Miserlou, Surf Beat)
The Ventures (Walk Don't Run, 2000 Pound Bee, Hawaii Five-O)
The Surfaris (Wipe Out, Bom-Bora)
The Chantays (Pipeline)
The Pyramids (Penetration)
The Belairs (Mr Moto)
The Challengers (K-39)
The Sentinals (Sunset Beach)
All above (except The Ventures) from an old Rhino collection of surf instrumentals. The Ventures were probably the most successful, aside from Dick Dale, they were very prolific and churned out tons of albums. Hits included Walk Don't Run, 2000 Pound Bee, Perfidia and the famous Hawaii Five-O theme. They also did surf versions of other artists like Duane Eddy (Rebel Rousing) and The Shadows (Apache).

Other than stuff like The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean (and the famous laugh in Wipe Out), most surf rock was strictly instrumental. Another exception might be The Trashmen's hit, Surfin Bird. It was a short lived phenomenon in some ways, lasting from about 1961 to 1964, when the British Invasion kind of wiped everybody off the charts. As far as more modern bands, a couple pursuing the retro-instrumental style come to mind...Man Or Astro-Man and Shadowy Men From A Shadowy Planet (they did the theme for The Kids In The Hall TV show). Actually, anytime you hear melodic, double picked, clean toned guitars, with a touch of tasteful tremelo bar, you're hearing the influence of surf music.

Thank you. Report It

  • Pretty much any Jan & Dean

All I know is Dick Dale and the Surfari's.

Check out The B*tch Boys - lol! Amazing surf rock!

The Ventures were just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and I watched the induction ceremony on TV (not specifically to see the Ventures though). Anyway, they had some good songs IMHO, and they're considered to be pioneers of surf rock.

The Amino Acids....Best I can think of.

The Beach Boys pretty much had a lock on surf rock vocals although Jan and Dean had their ‘Surf City.’ On the instrumental side of surf rock, Dick Dale and the Deltones would be another choice. You also have the most classic of all surf instrumentals, ‘WIPEOUT’ by the Surfaris. On the periphery, you have the Ventures with the Hawaii Five-O Theme. On the ballad side you have ‘Under the Boardwalk’ by the Drifters.

Then you have something a little different called ‘BEACH MUSIC.’ This is not hard rock per se but something that is a little slower and to which you can ‘shag.’ The ‘SHAG’ is a popular dance along the southeast coast of the U.S. and it is the official state dance of South Carolina. One of the most played beach songs of all time is ‘Shama Lama Ding Dong’ by the Band of Oz.

Dick Dale and His Del-Tones--"Miserlou", "The Victor", "Tidal Wave"
    The Surfaris--"Wipeout" and "Point Panic"
    The Chantays--"Move It" and "Pipeline"
The Ventures--"Walk Don't Run", "Perfidia", Hawaii 5-0 theme
    The Lively Ones--"Surf Rider"
There's plenty of compilations available--check out "Revenge of the Surf Instrumentals" (MCA Records) or "King of the Surf Guitar: The Best of Dick Dale and his Del-Tones (Rhino Records)--contains an AWESOME cover of "Pipeline" with Dick Dale and Stevie Ray Vaughan. There's some good stuff on the "Pulp Fiction" soundtrack CD as well.
