Dick Dale (Miserlou, Surf Beat)
The Ventures (Walk Don't Run, 2000 Pound Bee, Hawaii Five-O)
The Surfaris (Wipe Out, Bom-Bora)
The Chantays (Pipeline)
The Pyramids (Penetration)
The Belairs (Mr Moto)
The Challengers (K-39)
The Sentinals (Sunset Beach)
All above (except The Ventures) from an old Rhino collection of surf instrumentals. The Ventures were probably the most successful, aside from Dick Dale, they were very prolific and churned out tons of albums. Hits included Walk Don't Run, 2000 Pound Bee, Perfidia and the famous Hawaii Five-O theme. They also did surf versions of other artists like Duane Eddy (Rebel Rousing) and The Shadows (Apache).
Other than stuff like The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean (and the famous laugh in Wipe Out), most surf rock was strictly instrumental. Another exception might be The Trashmen's hit, Surfin Bird. It was a short lived phenomenon in some ways, lasting from about 1961 to 1964, when the British Invasion kind of wiped everybody off the charts. As far as more modern bands, a couple pursuing the retro-instrumental style come to mind...Man Or Astro-Man and Shadowy Men From A Shadowy Planet (they did the theme for The Kids In The Hall TV show). Actually, anytime you hear melodic, double picked, clean toned guitars, with a touch of tasteful tremelo bar, you're hearing the influence of surf music.
