Whats your VIEW on ROCK bands covering POP songs?!

Question: I quite like the idea of 'rocking up' a pop song.

Some bands do have done that :
Green Day : Shout! (by the isley brothers)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQBUPS9dA...

Alien ant farm : Smooth Criminal (m.jackson)

Whats your take on this ? And whats your favourite pop cover by a rock band ?

I suppose it's a lot better than pop stars covering rock songs. Avril Lavigne's "Chop Suey" would make anyone trust in her suicide. Joss Stone's take on The White Stripes was alright though. I guess each one is unique. Some are bad, some are less bad, and some are actually worth listening to. Some are done out of desperation, some out of humor, and others probably out of boredom. My favorite pop cover by a rock band would be Taking Back Sunday's "Message in a Bottle".

Well, seeing that a bunch of pop stars have long been covering classic rock tunes, (eg: Britney & Satisfaction etc)having it the other way around is appropriate.

it CAN be funny, but not always.

Bands have been doing this since the beginning of the century. The idea is usually a doorway to find how a band works, to showcase to a crowd, or just because you like the song.

You should definitely do and if someone tells you its lame spit in their face for their ignorance. Music has been covered or idolized for who knows how long.

And its not alt. bands covering pop bands. Pop bands have covered rock bands, rock bands have covered punk bands, rock bands have covered r&b bands, r&b bands have covered jazz bands. Covering songs is like learning a 4-chord structure; the second you do it, you're gonna want to show it off in front of a crowd.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight has been covered a bunch of times in 80 years. That is all I have to say.

i like it, my favorite is rufio - don't you forget about me and rufio - like a prayer

get the punk goes pop cd

I'm all for rock bands covering pop songs, as long as it sounds good of course.

One of my favorites:

I've heard some awesome rock covers of pop songs, and ive heard some bad ones.
Once, i heard a terrible cover of imagine, originally done by lennon, i believe by maynard, from tool.
it was his only pop cover i didnt like, though.
expirimentation is awesome, and as someone said earlier, if pop can steal it from rock, then rock should definitely be able to steal from pop, sometimes making it better than it already was.

Well, some bands are trying to put the 80's and 90's retro back in but with better music all i have to say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check out Rivetheads version of "Sexy Back" (the Justin Timberlake song) - it rocks.

i don't like it...however that said..Disturbed does an *** kicking version of Tears for Fears Shout...

Kinda funny.. ^.^
Listen to the remake of Oops I Did it Again by Children of Bodom!.. xD

It's not so terrible, sometimes it's kind of funny. MXPX did a punk version of Barbie Girl, laughed my *** off when I first heard it. And rock bands doing pop covers is better than pop artists doing rock covers. (What was Spears thinking when she sang I Love Rock 'n' Roll?)
@->-->-

I think its wykid! But it mostly depends on who is the original singer and who is covering.

My favorite is Beat It redone by Pierce the Veil

I think its stupid!
Why would someone want to take a pop song and turn it into Rock?

DISGUSTING !!!!!!!!!
