Why is it the drums in music are so quiet these days?!

Question: I have noticed that (with a few exceptions) the drumming in recent albums has been getting quieter and quieter, do the point now where they are starting to sound a bit pathetic and in the background, seems to ruin some albums, e.g. in Nevermind by Nirvana they sound awesome in say some more recent rock albums like say from Muse or U2 they just sound pathetic, same thing seems to be happening in Indie music, why is this happening?

its because of the loudness war.

Word!! I've been wondering the same thing!! I usually try to mess with my volume control and up the drums but sadly it dosen't work well. Untitled 8 by Sigur Rós is one of my favorite b/c it has great drums especially at 6:02. I don't know why it's happening but I sure wish I would stop! :D

its down to the difference between analouge and digital recording abillities with digital there is dnr or digital noise reduction that enables a more balanced effect whereas withanalouge its a more truer sound as in what you see is what you get thats why a lot of older music fans prefer lps or records as this was really the 1st form of analouge and each sound can be heard individually as opposed to cd music which sounds levelled out hence quieter drums
