Making a musical instrument: recorder?!


Question: i need to make a recorder for physics class and have looked all over the internet but i can't find were each whole should be and how long the tupe to be. Does anyone know the dimensions for a recorder?

i'm planning on making the recorder with a pvc tube.

The most important thing about creating a woodwind instrument is the mouthpiece. It needs to be able to split the airstream and create an area of low pressure inside the tube. Essentially once you figure out the mouthpiece, the rest is pretty much simple mathematics. When you divide the length in half, the pitch goes up exactly an octave. You can figure out where the other holes go by placing them equidistant to that middle point.

I don't know of a website, but a great book that illustrates this concept perfectly – it's actually a kids' reference book, but fantastic – is called "Music" from the Dorling-Kindersely series, "Eyewitness Books." I found it on Amazon,

but you may be able to find it at a local library. From what I recall, it has pretty detailed plans/crossections/etc.
