P DIDDY hes the mastermind behind (1)sean john he has his on (2)crystal brand his own (2)lincoln navagator sean john brand. and hes is the founder of the band(3) he is estimated to be in the high 800 million
i would have to go with kanye west, lupe fiasco, nelly, david banner, common, jay-z, diddy. there are others. i would think that anyone who had the sense to start their own record label or clothing line is pretty smart.

I have two because there are two different kinds of smart. Street smarts and Book Smarts. Im going to go with Lupe when it comes to book smarts because I think you are talking about out of mainstream artists. Wanna talk underground?? Well, its this dude from Harvard named Zewama, Zeqama, or something like that, who is actually nasty. Appeared on a song with Juelz called Street Smarts. Cant find it no where tho.

well 1st of all i think almost all of them are "smart" but who do i think shows it the most:
common~ his lyrics are not about the same old topics he talks with class and doesnt curse too much
krs-one~ his deep lyrics have to come from some1 with a high level of intelligence, he uses alot of historical ref. in his lyrics.... i can tell he studies alot of different topics from world history, us history, and the news. he is very well rounded and has an excellant way of getting his message out thru his music.......
jay-z~not so much from a lyrical point but he has a very smart business sense about him, when he finally has retired for real he will still continue to prosper financaly from expanding himself into many different markets (ie: clothing, record lable ect)

i think the smartest RAPPER is Jay-Z. Hes lyrically inclined came from nothing to owning his own clothing line to liquor even part-owner of a basketball team and having clubs and i'm sure there are plenty of things i didn't mention

Well as far as straight up intelegence goes i would say Nas...as far as making very smart economical desicisons i hate to say it but soulja boy. I hate every song he makes but they all turn out to be hits i mean the dude makin money
To be honest, that's not a fair question to ask because living or dead, there's a lot of artists that have made an impact in our lives one way or another, so that in and of itself is an accomplishment. Some people say Lupe Fiasco, others Common, or Jay-Z, 2 Pac, Talib Kweli, I could go on. But the beauty of hip hop is that everybody can add to the pot. If we had to choose who's the "smartest" then that would take away what hip hop really means. I mean, if you really want to say who's the smartest, you might as well say the Sugar Hill Gang, because they were the pioneers of something that's almost 3 decades old, which is probably older than some of you answering this question. To get on a song and talk in rhyme for 15 minutes, that's pretty clever, especially since you see what it's become.

Tupac Shakur seemed very conscious of the world around him when he was doing his thing.
And the knowledge that people close to him as well as numorous sources have stated that he was a man who was well versed in many styles of literature. From Machiavelli to Alice Walker, to Robin Morgan to Herman Melville, to Shakespeare, all the way to Jamaica kinkaid, and so on and so forth. These books were not force fed down his throat by professors or teachers. HE TOOK the initiative to open up most of these books and read them to educate himself.
Given the fact he was a high school drop out born and raised in poverty, people overlook the fact this man was extremely gifted.
If you observe his powerful writing skills as well as prose/poetry in and outside of the realms of hiphop.....
You can say Tupac Shakur was a rare gift who chose to use hiphop as his medium of self expression..
An exceptionally smart man who saw a niche in American pop music and, also was wise enough to see that hiphop music in the mid 80's- early 90's was growing increasingly popular. So he grabbed opportunity by the waist because the doors were wide open then.
A wise man indeed. He was more than just a rapper or even poet. He was the very essense of an Artist who knew how to utilize the tools of pop culture and express his message effectively.
^ Note he was also an effective actor (Juice, Poetic Justice, Gridlock'd) regardless if the film was good or so so, Tupac shined because of his strong presence.
