Thirteen Red Roses For Jenny, sung by Aussies Rick & Thel Carey. It tells of a schoolgirl who died & red roses were planted at her school in her memory.

This is a really old song and I used to sit and listen to it with my dad and the tears would stream down my face.

"Don't Make Me Go to Bed and I'll Be Good" By Roy Acuff

A laughing baby boy one evening in his play
Disturbed the household with his noisy glee
I warned him to be quiet but he soon would disobey
For he would soon forget a word from me
I called him to my side and said now son you go to bed
Your conduct has been very very rude
With quivering lips and tear filled eyes he pleaded then with me
Don't make me go to bed and I'll be good

Don't papa and I'll be good don't papa and I'll be good
That's what I heard him say and it haunts me night and day
Don't make me go to bed and I'll be good
[ Lyrics found at www.mp3lyrics.org/HM5a ]

Our lives have just been gladdened by his bright ascending beam
Our boy now in our heart was very dear
We hastened to his bed one night he was talking in his sleep
He didn't seem to know that we were near
I took him in my arms and found his body raked with pain
To ease the pain we did the best we could
It broke my heart to hear him crying loudly in his sleep
Don't make me go to bed and I'll be good
[ fiddle ]
All night and day we watched and prayed we never left his side
To give him up it seemed we never could
It broke my heart to hear him crying just before he died
Don't make me go to bed and I'll be good

Don't papa and I'll be good...

Where Have You Been? Kathy Mattea or
Country Bumpkin Cal Smith

Claire had all but given up
When she and Edwin fell in love
She touched his face and shook her head
In disbelief she sighed and said
In many dreams I've held you near
Now at last you're really here

Chorus
Where have you been?
I've looked for you for ever and a day
Where have you been?
I'm just not myself when you're away

He asked her for her hand for life
Then she became a salesman's wife
He was home each night by 8
But one stormy evening he was late
Her frightened tears fell to the floor
Until his key turned in the door

Chorus

They'd never spent a night apart
For 60 yrs she heard him snore
Now they're in a hospital
In seperate beds on different floors

Claire soon lost her memory, forgot the names of family
She never spoke a word again
Then one day they wheeled him in
He held her hand and stroked her hair
In a fragile voice she said

Chorus

Where have you been
Ive searched for you forever and a day
Where have you been
Im just not myself when your away
Im just not myself when your away

COUNTRY BUMPKIN

HE WALKED INTO THE BAR AND PLACED HIS LANKY FRAME UPON A TALL BAR STOOL
AND WITH A LONG SOFT SOUTHERN DRAWL HE SAID I'LL TAKE A GLASS OF ANYTHING
THAT'S COOL
A BAR-ROOM GIRL WITH WISE AND KNOWING EYES SLOWLY LOOKED HIM UP AND DOWN
AND SHE THOUGHT I WONDER HOW ON EARTH THIS COUNTRY BUMPKIN FOUND HIS WAY
TO TOWN

(CHORUS 1)
SHE SAID HELLO COUNTRY BUMPKIN. HOW'S THE FROST OUT ON THE PUMPKIN
I'VE SEEN SOME SIGHTS BUT MAN YOU'RE SOMETHIN'
WHERE'D YOU COME FROM COUNTRY BUMPKIN

(VERSE 2)
IT WAS JUST A SHORT YEAR LATER, IN A SWEAT-DRENCHED BED OF JOYFUL TEARS
AND DEATH-LIKE PAIN
INTO THIS WONDROUS WORLD OF MANY WONDERS, ONE MORE WONDER CAME
THAT SAME WOMAN'S FACE WAS WRAPPED UP IN A RAPTURED LOOK OF LOVE AND
TENDERNESS
AS SHE MARVELLED AT THE SOFT AND WARM AND CUDDLY BOY-CHILD FEEDING AT HER
BREAST

(CHORUS 2)
SHE SAID SHE SAID HELLO COUNTRY BUMPKIN. FRESH AS FROST OUT ON THE
PUMPKIN
I'VE SEEN SOME SIGHTS BUT BABE YOU'RE SOMETHIN'
MAMA LOVES HER COUNTRY BUMPKIN

(VERSE 3)
FORTY YEARS OF HARD WORK LATER, IN A SIMPLE QUIET AND PEACEFUL COUNTRY
PLACE
THE HEAVY HAND OF TIME HAD NOT ERASED THE RAPTURED WONDER FROM THE
WOMAN'S FACE
SHE WAS LYING ON HER DEATH BED KNOWING FULLY WELL HER RACE WAS NEARLY RUN
BUT SHE SOFTLY SMILED AND LOOKED INTO THE SAD EYES OF HER HUSBAND AND HER
SON

(CHORUS 3)
AND SHE SAID SO LONG COUNTRY BUMPKIN. THE FROST IS GONE NOW FROM THE
PUMPKIN
I'VE SEEN SOME SIGHTS AND LIFE'S BEEN SOMETHIN'
SEE YOU LATER COUNTRY BUMPKIN

George Jones's "Where Grass Won't Grow" is a really sad song. "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is obsessive rather than sad.
