it seems like you are trying to sing too loud. The reason the american idol people can sing so softly is because they are singing into a microphone, and do not have to compete with any sounds. They can sing quietly and have it amplified through the PA systems. For you to sing as smooth and soft as they do, try going into a quiet room and sing softly. Don't try and sing like you are in the shower (competing with the water noise) if you sing with music playing, have it very quiet.

see if that helps

You just have to be a good singer, and it comes naturally. If you can't do it natually, you are not a good singer.

I was trying to think of of a subtle way of saying what Ashley said so bluntly....... but it is true.

Don't listen to the Ashley chick... though you do have to be born with some sort of voice. It doesn't have to be perfect, though. I find practicing often while cleaning the house or whatever is very helpful to get better at it. However, some people require special training by professionals. But again, if you can't carry some sort of tune to begin with... it just won't work. I've never taken singing lessons myself, but I've gotten this good by practicing it constantly, researching good exercises, etc etc... keep at it!

dont shout... w h i s p e r the words, make your voice a soft sound.

Are u in choir or have u taken vocal lessons? If not try them. they will help, i promise. Everyone can sing, the point is if u can sing well...and nothing that i tell u over yahoo answers can magically make u a better singer, sorry because everyone's voice is different what works for me may not work for u. but look into the vocal lessons and they can probably help u determine what needs to be done in ur vocal training to make ur voice sound soft and smooth.
