I'd like to become a better singer/vocalist, what can I do?!

Question: I'd like to work on the strength of my voice and tone.

I'd like to be able to sing an 'a' if you ask for an 'a' and sing a 'b flat' if you ask for a 'b flat'. Is this learnable? I play guitar, harmonica, piano...but my voice is holding me back.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Support your voice with your diaphragm (not your throat) and open your mouth (not wide, drop your jaw).

It is learnable, especially if you hear the note right before you sing it.

There is also what is called "perfect pitch". Most people don't do this, cuz it takes awhile. Generally, people know what middle C sounds like in their head and then they figure out how big the jump is to the note that is being asked for, and then they sing that note. You could learn to do that, but it probably wouldn't be all that useful, in my opinion. They have pitch pipes and such, so usually it's easier just to sing something by ear.

If you do want to learn how to have perfect pitch, I would suggest practicing with a piano. Find middle C, sing it, and then at the beginning of each time you practice try to find it before you play it. To learn the distances between notes, sing through sheet music with a piano, and write in how far apart the notes are. That is very helpful when learning theory as well.

Make sure to support your voice!

sing a scale up and down
me, ma, mo, me, ma- get higher through each word but u have 2 sing it. start singing girl songs that will help u .
but what ever u do dont strain ur voice.

Being able to do this is called "Perfect Pitch" many are born with this talent and others have to learn it. Playing piano is a great way to learn but if you don't have access to a piano just work on your scales and learn as much as you can about music from the internet. Something that has really helped me a lot is recording myself, I'm still not amazing but I've definately improved. I upload my videos to youtube and have others critique them so I know how others view my voice and many give you pretty good advice on what you're doing wrong. Give it a try, and if you're emberassed you don't have to show your face.

Find an ear training course on the internet that will help to master relative pitch if you don't have perfect pitch.
