What does "resonator" mean on a banjo?!

Question: I'm looking at 5-string banjos and some of them specify "with resonator". What does that mean, and how does it make it different from any other 5-string?

The resonator is a "backing" on the round part of the banjo. This backing reflects the sound back toward the front of the instrument and therefore makes it sound louder/clearer. It is something extra for those people who want that type of performance. If you are just starting out, you can get one with or without a resonator. It is really up to the individual. It does add extra weight to the instrument as well as cost. If you are starting out....see if you can find a good deal in a pawn shop or the adds in a paper. Don't spend a lot of money on a new "named" instrument. You may not like the banjo. It isn't for everyone. But if you like it, have fun, good luck and keep smiling.
