Unfortunately, a family member of mine recently passed, so I also went looking for the same type of songs. Here is what was chosen:

Don't Let The Sun Go Down - Elton John and George Michael
Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
Songbird and Fields of Gold (both really beautiful songs) - Eva Cassidy (Fields of Gold is a Sting cover, you might want to check out which version you might prefer)
Angel and I Will Remember You - Sarah McLachlan (someone mentioned these two already - they are really beautiful songs)
It's So Hard To Say Goodbye and Yesterday - Boyz II Men
In My Life and Yesterday - The Beatles (this was most recently sung by a contestant, Ramiele Malubay, on American Idol)

Those are the few I can remember. Someone else also posted that you should play what had been the person's favorite music. We did that - everyone knew what the New Edition and Beastie Boys was all about, and it made people remember him all the more. (That stuff was played during the after-funeral wake, when everyone started drinking and telling their favorite stories about him). I'm sorry for your loss.

I Can Only Imagine by Mercy Me is an awesome song for funerals that may be uplifting
Really sad ones are:
Go Rest High On That Mountain by Vince Gill
If Your Reading This by Tim McGraw

Band of Horses: The Funeral

"For Good" from Wicked (Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz)

oh and you should play seasons of love from the Broadway musical RENT!

(Good Riddance) Time of your life - Green Day

One of the most touching songs at a funeral.

together again by janet jackson.
i prefer that song for my funeral in the future ü

You should play songs that mean something to the person who is deceased and the people they left behind.

But if you must have some random ones. Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" is probably the best rock/country one you could use because it starts of slow and sad and ends intense and relatively up beat.

Theres a few I can think of that always make me cry when I DO think about them being played at a funeral

Goodbye my lover - James Blunt

Never say goodbye - Bon Jovi

My way - Frank Sinatra

Wish you were here - Pink Floyd

Live like you were dying - Tim MagGraw

I dont want to miss a thing - Aerosmith

All very moving, emotional songs

OR you could just play anything by Celine Dion, although that will probably make the other funeral goers want to kill themselves, lord I hate Celine Dion lol seriously she annoys the crap out of me!!!

love you till the end by the pogues

I really needed that message when my young cousin died

queen...hey hey hey good bye, i kid.try stevie wonders thats what friends are for.

"Cristofori's Dream" by David Lanz. I actually PLAY the piano, and performed this live at my grandmother's funeral. I played it because my grandmother always liked to sit & listen to me practice that song, while she was living. After the ceremony, people were coming up to me saying "Thank you for that. It was touching."

You could also play "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton.

If the deceased wasn't very old, then "Gone Too Soon" by Michael Jackson.
