Does anyone else think the Beatles are overrated?!

Question: I agree with you Mewzann....
They were this iconic band everyone worships, but during the 60s, were a 'boy band'. girls totally dug them, and screamed just like the girls did for Blink and NSYNC.

They wrote catchy tunes, but to me, that's where it ends. If I was to meet a Beatle, I would honestly say that I respect you as a musician, but I dislike the Beatles. Simple as that. I don't care that everyone on here loves them, but there are far more important bands to me that influenced MY bands such as The Clash.

No.

i dont really listen to them...but they did basicly start rock so..nah.

Meow, I come from that juandra. No they weren't overrated. The genius was John Lennon. After his death, that's why you can't seem to get the connection to their greatness.

yeah, kinda, though John Lennon was great. All I know is I wish they weren't doing it again this week on American Idol.

Nope

YES

No, they have influenced almost every rock band in some way. That's not to mention the bands that are blatantly ripping them off (read: Oasis).

Yes, but they were a great band but they are overrated cause they were a pop band and I think that fame got to their head, and by the way no they havent influenced every band cause im in a band and im not and nor are da ramones or mettallica

During the early part of their career when they make the girls swoon with their goodie-goodie image, I would say yes, they were somehow overrated. But their later works are quite amazing (starting from Rubber Soul).

I don't.

Don't just throw out such a hornet's nest without backing it up with reasons.

WHY do you think they're overrated?

Who do *you* think made a bigger impact on rock music?

People who deny The Beatles' influence on popular music make me laugh..

I DO!!! I think they get WAY too much credit for being a "rock" band. If you listen to their songs they were 100% POP!! Nobody could get the 12 year old girls screaming and crying while they sing the most sugary sweet bubble gum pop songs ever written like they could...........

yesterday
she loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
love, love me do
I want to hold your hand
and I love her
can't buy me love
yellow submirene
all you need is love

NSYNC had harder rock'n songs than that!

yep! the beatles and nirvana are the 2 most overrated bands in history. simple as that.

I like The Beatles, but I do think they're overrated. Crediting them with starting rock n' roll is a bit of stretch for me, because there were /many/ greats that came before them and made them who they were.

I tend to classify them as more of a pop/rock band than a straight-up rock band, and like I said - although I find them largely overrated, they did have a huge impact on music, celebrity, and pop-culture.

Yes, they were over-rated in the same way nuclear bombs are over-rated at killing people and destroying cities.
I probably shouldn't even get into this right now. I'll come back and edit later.
The Beatles were innovators from their beginnings through to the end. Did the music they were making at first become known as Pop? Yes, that's where the term Popular Music came from. People liked their music and it became popular. The term is used nowadays to denote music that is made to sell. The Beatles were extremely controversial in their day. There were massive record public record burnings protesting their music and the effect it was having on the kids (particularly the girls!). No one was going around putting expletives in their songs and there wasn't much in the way of insinuations back then so their early music might sound light to you but it wasn't at the time. Furthermore, they continued to stay at the forefront of making innovative music throughout their existence. They sold 15 million records (a record - 9 singles and 6 LPs) in the U.S. in 1964 - their U.S. debut. they had the top five positions on Billboard 100 (12 altogether) in April, '64. Never been done before or since. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" sold 5 million copies and was the best selling single of the decade of the '60s (a tough decade to compete in record sales). They continued breaking sales records throughout their career. They have 16 of the top 100 singles and 7 of the top 100 albums of all time. They have records that there is not enough time and/or room to put on here. British, U.S., and worldwide. Germany, Australia, Dutch, Swedish, Canadian, Norwegian, Swiss, Finnish, Denmark, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Ireland, Malaysia, Spain, Zimbabwe, Italy, and Ethiopia. I can't believe you're dis'n the Beatles.

They had to quit touring (after, like a year) because they couldn't be heard over the roar of the crowd. They couldn't hear themselves play. They started the whole concept of huge outdoor shows. They overflowed ever arena they played in, every time they played.
They were innovators in multi-track recording.
They've had their songs recorded by more people than anyone else.
They changed the way people dressed, spoke , and cut their hair. That's right, they were the original long hairs.
They started the concept of music videos with "A Hard Days Night".
I can't go on. I've got to go. I'll probably be back later 'though.

hmmm...it depends really. are they over-rated as the most inventive, innovative, creative, experimental & artistic pop group of all time?: NO!

Are they the greatest/best band or rock 'n' roll band of all time?: NO! simply because , in my eyes The Beatles were not rock 'n' roll, yea i know that i am gonna catch hell for this, but i've felt this way for a while now, and i find that a wide variety of people agree with me.

The Beatles were essentially a pop group, if u wanna take it further, they were the first "Pop-Rock" band! that statement is not to diminish their work, i mean their music speaks for itself, it's absolutely brilliant, no one can ever take that away. But, The Beatles music does not qualify as rock 'n' roll in my book because it is not based on the blues. The beatles draw their inspiration from skiffle music, and Elvis. Back in those days, it wasn't bad or insulting to be considered a "pop group", because all music back then, even pop, was quality music, the polar opposite of what music is today. If The Beatles were a pop group, which i believe they were, they were the highest quality of pop that ever existed, an unattainable level of pop, set by the "pop gods" themselves: THE BEATLES!

So, i guess i would say no, the beatles were not over-rated, they just aren't what some people say they are, I.E. the greatest rock band of all time: thats a title/honour that will always belong to The Rolling Stones, who are sooooo damn Under-Rated, especially in comparison to the Beatles!

That should be your next question luv, ARE THE ROLLING STONES UNDER-RATED???: I'll be the first to answer this question: HELL YES!
