Can you respect bands that don't write there own music??!

Question: personaly, i can't. they should write there own, and deserve no respect if they don't.

Answers: personaly, i can't. they should write there own, and deserve no respect if they don't.

Yes. The way I see it, if I enjoy listening to the music and get something out of it, who cares who wrote it?

Think of it in terms of classical music: (not that I am a fan, but just for the sake of illustration) Beethoven wrote and conducted his 9th symphony for the first time, conductors and performers of it other than him still get lots of respect. Why should it be so very different with rock?

Also, lots of covers are better than the original. Some examples:

Nirvana's cover of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World

Bowie: http://www.dizzler.com/music/David_Bowie...

Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young's cover of Joni Mitchell's Woodstock

Joni Mitchell: http://www.dizzler.com/music/Joni_Mitche...
(although both versions are amazing)

Eric Clapton's cover of Bob Marley's I Shot The Sheriff

(Clapton's is not quite as good, but don't even TRY to say you can't repect him.)

Not expecting a Best Answer on this one, haha, since I obviously don't agree with you, but still, I had fun making my point.

not at all

Do you respect a person as an author who reads a book out loud but didn't actually write it?
Not really. Same goes with music. You can sing it as great as you want, but unless you wrote it and let your artistic abilities come out, it doesn't do it for me.

half the industry doesn't write their own music. even people you probably think did.
they collaborate, they influence, songwriters give to people that can actually sing, etc.

Yes I can, every band has to start off somewhere. And sometimes there are a lot of really talented musicians out there, but just aren't creative enough to write their own stuff.

Of course I think it's better when they CAN write their own music, it shows more originality and talent. But if they can't that doesn't mean I should disrespect them.

yes i can because they have the talent to perfomr them
i have more respect for the ones that write their own though, same with authors, etc

I can't. If can't write your own song you shouldn't perform it and shouldn't even be in the music industry

Respect the musical talent they do have: ability to sing, play guitar, etc. But, a lot is lost when they didn't write the song themselves.

no.
& they shouldn't be called an "artist" either, rather a "performer."

nope.
i agree with you 100%.

Definitly if they didn't play the music that other people wrote that person would be out of a job man.
You have to wonder could i come up with that many songs to write?
Sure i think they should try, but covers are sometimes 100 times better than the originals.

well I can understand if they have someone else write maybe 1 or 2 songs and then they give that person credit.

cause evenutally every band will do a remake of somekind.

But i absolutely CANT if they have someone write all their songs and they parade around like its their own

I can somewhat respect them, but a singer or band that writes their own stuff gets the utmost respect.

Amen brother, AAAAAAAAAAMEN!

I pretty much agree. Writing the music is most of it, but the other part is performing it. I guess, if they don't it definitely changes my opinion of the band, but I still listen to them.

I agree with you. I'm sick of these stupid bands that get famous just by covering someone else's work. Like limp biskit for example, they got famous from covering that george michael song. And remember that stupid band orgy? They got famous for covering that new order song, and that was their only hit!!! If you can't come out with an original song at first, then you have no right to try to make it in the music business. Most bands from the past had to come up with orignial stuff to make it. Playing music professionally is all about originality and talent. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to compose a song and if you can't do it, find something else to do with your life.

Yeah, you can. There are a lot of bands that are very talented musicians, but weak songwriters, and there are a lot of bands out there with phenomenally talented songwriters who could be far more successful writing for other people. I guess it comes down to song choice, and artistic integrity basically.

I think it was Bob Dylan, and the Beatles who set the precedent for bands and singers writing their own material to be taken seriously as artists. But, if you look back, Janis Joplin only wrote a few of her songs; I don't believe Sinatra wrote any of his songs; Jimmy Hendrix' cover of Dylan "All Along the Watchtower" is far superior to Dylan's own version; Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah" is more respected and loved than Leonard Cohen's version.

Then you've got songwriter's like Daniel Johnston, who possesses a remarkable song-writing voice; writes these beautiful, catchy, hook-filled POP songs - and I mean classic pop songs, of the Lennon-McCartney variety. He deserves to be a star, but due to a severe bipolar disorder, exists only on the fringes as a cult figure. His songs could stand beside anything that the contestants sing on "American Idol."

Anton Newcombe is another exceptionally gifted songwriter, with an incredibly dysfunctional band, The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Watch the film DIG!, where you learn They've sabotaged practically every chance they had at stardom and success. Would his credibility be hurt if he wrote a song for another band to play? I think not.

David Berman, a songwriter/poet who fronts the Silver Jews; again some of the best song-writing of the past two decades, but the guy can barely sing, and only plays rudimentary guitar. You wouldn't think twice about a band covering Berman, because the songs themselves are brilliant.

Now, if you mean bands or singers who only play songs written by committee, in order to be popular, then no, I don't really respect them as artists, but with all Pop and Rock, it's half art, half shill game.

A group that doesn't write their own music, is a boy band with instruments.

Some musicians just can't write, and some songwriters just can't perform. They are a perfect pairing.

Would Jim Steinman be a household name without a certain singer named Meat Loaf? Or Bonnie Tyler? I think not...
