no, he was one of a kind!

AMAZING!

He killed rock and roll and his music sounds like cats being tortured. Cant stand that unwashed, nasty, untalented creep

The only reason he is so "cool" is because he shot himself. Otherwise he would be no better than the common rockstar. If the dude from Nickelback shot himself he would be a legend. Kurt Cobain sucks with his raspy *** voice. Terrible. I'm glad he died so Dave Grohl could make his own band, the Foo Fighters. 100 times better than Nirvana. Go smoke some weed and keep thinking he's such a great influence.

Everyone is better than him. No offense ment here, he did start a new thing, but that doesn't mean he was talented. anyone can take a **** ton of drugs and write songs that are kinda nothings with the same simple chords.

you never know untill that special person comes along, but nirvana is, was, and will always be amazing.

bert mccracken

You look at the great bands of the century, and Cobain was one that played AND sang, which, I guess, could make him one of the greatest frontmen of all time. I mean, Steven Tyler, Bon Scott/Brian Johnson, Axl Rose, Robert Plant, Ozzy Osbourne are all great singers, but they didn't play an instrument. Cobain, however, played guitar and he was pretty good at it too. Plus his voice is awesome, so he's got props for that.

The greatest would be Jimi Hendrix, who pretty much pioneered rock and his music is what made rock what it is today, and on top of that he sang along with his amazing guitar playing.

Paul Gilbert. and i don't really like Korn that much but they created Numetal and influenced and worked with alot of bands and movie sound tracks.

i was so there. =)
of course i still love him.

Yeah Nirvana was good, but Kurt is overrated since he killed himself. They werent even the best grunge band, AIC was. Pearl Jam and AIC both broke thru before Nirvana so I dont understand why Nirvana is credited with changing music. Wait, yes I do, its because the dude shot himself.

While Kurt was great and was very influential,
I don't consider him the best at all.

Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin are the ones I'd have to say that are the best/most influential.
Although none of those three are, in my opinion, the absolute best.

But when you combine best with most influential, it'd be one of those three.

Most are better, the guy was average at best. Granted, Nirvana was one of the bands that was able to catch lightning in a bottle and have huge success in a short period of time. I am of the opinion that Dave Grohl has far more legendary status than Cobain, he has been able to eclipse all that he achieved in Nirvana and then some. The guy may have been a hero in the eyes of some, but a guy that soothes his pain with armloads of junk and a mouthful of shotgun should be a hero in the eyes of no one.

he was very influential in the formation of other grunge and alternative bands. he basically shaped the future of music till now. but of course he's not the only influence, but he's probably one of the main influences. and his suicide seemed to impact music more than his music. but i agree, nirvana is sorta overrated. but don't get me wrong, i still love their music. but when you say grunge, people think nirvana, nirvana isn't the only nor best grunge bands. there are other bands like soundgarden or alice in chains..etc

but i think kurt cobain will be very influential in the years to come...rip kurt

I can think of a hundred people better than he. And I'm not an idiot. He appeals to a certain kind of person. That's all well and good and more power to those people. But he was not a particularly good singer. He was a mediocre to below musician. (He wasnt even the best musician in Nirvana for that matter.) And Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, John Lennon and many other great lyricists he is not. Everyone has an artist who does it for them. It is INCREDIBLY obnoxious, short sighted and ignorant to call someone an idiot if they dont happen to agree with you.

Dontchya think?

EDIT FOR ASKER:

I didnt say ONE disrespectful word. I gave an evaluation based upon my FORTY YEARS as a musician. I have played with and know musicians personally who blow him, Nirvana and half the other bands out today out of the water. And MANY of the ones I know have changed music for many bands, INCLUDING Nirvana. If you want to debate stuff JR, make sure you have some idea of who you are talking to.

As I said. It is obnoxious, short sighted and ignorant to call people idiots for disagreeing with you. I guess that's all I have to say here. You are asking for an opinion. When you do that, you expect people to have one. If you want to be around people who agree with you about Nirvana, go find a heroin pit and knock yourself out. Not everyone thinks the guy was all that. Sorry. That's the way it is sometimes. I dont think YOU are an idiot. At least not for liking Nirvana. You want to talk about respect? Try respecting the people answering your question first.

GENERAL EDIT:

Playing guitar AND singing does not make you unique or the greatest of all time. Some other examples of influential guitarists who could play AND sing:

Paul Simon
Sting
John Lennon
George Harrison
Eric Clapton
Jimi Hendrix
Chuck Berry
Steve Stills
Neil Young
Jerry Garcia
Duane Allman
John Mayer
B.B. King
Elvis
Bob Marley
Joni Mitchell
Sheryl Crowe
Bonnie Raitt
Ann Wilson (Heart)
Willie Nelson
Patsy Cline
Johnny Cash

To name a few. See any influences in there?

He and Nirvana were good but very overrated. I've heard him called a genius even though his lyrics make absolutely no sense.

He was our last great rockstar. I think the torch has been passed though, Dave Grohl's going to be the guy people will remember in this decade's rock music. I will admit most of why many people know Nirvana is because Kurt died, but I actually like them because of their sound. When did people stop caring about the sound in music?
PS: I think it's cool that he sang and played guitar, I'm trying to do that...almost have In Bloom down perfectly.
@->-->-

The effect he had on music? Opened the door for thousands of bands? Cobain and his "grunge" movement only opened the door for talentless hacks like himself. Bands like his since then can barely string a whole album together worthy to be marketed. Makes you wonder why people illegally download music these days. Maybe one or two good songs amongst all the filler.

Cobain's a joke - I'm young, dirty and angry....worship me! One heaping helping of shotgun cured that.

I don't like the word "Best"
because no one is the "Best"
your saying
Kurt Cobain is the greatest degree or extent that has existed.
I love Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, at that
but I can't clearly say he was the Best there was ....
But he did make a great impact in Music

I personally believe others like Ozzy Osbourne has impacted music more than he did.
Yet thats just my Opinion

nirvana was undoubtedly influential, but i think it was more representative of the times and not necessarily the music. music in general was looking for a breath of fresh air and grunge music delivered that. cobain's music and lyrics were great. was he great guitarist? no. lyricist? yes. he was original and passionate. heres the problem: too often his Seattle peers (and yours too) are overlooked and overshadowed. nirvana was not the first to break through...im surprised no one has mentioned the power that used to be MTV. smells like teen spirit and the video to the song launched the band into infamy. i believe a huge portion of their success is owed to that video. consider this: eddie vedder blows his head off after Vs. is he a rock immortal? is he a legend who people rave about and ask questions on yahoo about? probably. alice in chains doesnt factor into this sort of question too much as jerry cantrell was behind some of their greatest songs and people knew that. i disagree with everyone concerning his voice...it was original and unpolished and sounds nothing like what you typically hear. thats the appeal...it wasnt an arena voice or a pop voice. bob dylan a great voice? no, not in the classical sense of the word "great". this does not mean that i would prefer anyone else to sing his songs. nor would i with cobain. he wrote amazing tunes...but would his music (still being great) have the same impact today as it did years ago? no. he came at the right time, had the right tools around him, and had the benefit of being one of the pioneers of a musical revolution. he was cast at the forefront of the pack. you of all people should be able to recognize the influence the entire city of Seattle had on the music world. maybe you are biased. to think that no one could have an impact on music the way he did is silly and discredits all aspiring singer/songwriters out there right now. i feel like music in general is pretty bad (in a recession, if you will) and we are due for another "revolution". someone will come along and answer the call. maybe they were influenced by cobain...maybe they were influenced by a million other essential artists we could list here. maybe they'll say, "oh yeah, kurt cobain i heard of that guy."

Kurt cobain influenced music for i believe most of the type of rock i like i hear it in everything. i think he affected rock in a very powerfull way with his use of raw bareing of his soul. his voice his vulnerability and use of powerchords and yes its true untill unplugged nirvana was not widely known but once the world heard him and got to hear the rest of there stuff they where in awe and he captured rock and roll for along time and still has a big part to play the tunes still being made

Wow, I can't believe the people on here who refuse to admit he had talent! Sorry he didn't meet your standards. You obviously do not have much (good) taste in music. In my opinion, he was one of the most talented performers of all time. The most talented, that is impossible to say. It would be really sad if there was never another revolution in rock similar to what Nirvana helped create.

P.S. Dave Grohl doesn't even come close to being as talented front man as Kurt Cobain.
