Are There Any Good Lyricists In Rock Today?!

Question: This is taken from Supawoopig's post in response to the worst lyricists in rock today....

My Nomination:
Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) and Rhett Miller (Old 97's).
Rhett Miller had a scholarship to Sarah Lawrence for creative writing. There are plenty out there, just two I thought I would offer.

I'm not really hearing anything thought-provoking on radio. I gravitate towards quirky indie rock. Their lyrics tend to be very off the beaten path.

So for me, it's either "rock & roll' lyrics like stuff Wolfmother or Black Stone Cherry would do, or fun/quirky stuff like of Montreal or Deerhoof.

I do like lyrics Secret Machines put together.

Tom Delonge (angels and airwaves)

Max Bemis is the best lyricist in rock.

I like Old 97's.

Dusty from Between The Buried and Me is an amazing lyricist. his lyrics are like poems, and the descriptions in them are amazing.

Neil Peart

Joseph Arthur
Gordon Downie (The Tragically Hip)
Dave Mustaine

BTW, if you like Wilco, Joseph Arthur did a side project with the drummer and bass player called Holding the Void. Apparently, Arthur wrote the entire CD in one night.

I nominate Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty and Art Alexakis of Everclear.

Amy Correia

James Russell Mercer (The Shins)

Colin Meloy (The Decemberists)

Dax Riggs

Hayley Williams and Josh Farro.

Isaac Brock - Modest Mouse
Tom Waits
Matthew Good
Win Butler - Arcade Fire
Matt Berninger - The National
Adam Olenius - Shout Out Louds

To name a few.

Edit: Fonzie T, Of Montreal are a pretty rad band, although thier lyrics can be a tad crazy. Spencer krug(Wolf parade, Sunset Rubdown, and Frog Eyes, I think) writes pretty crazy stuff. The dude from iron & Wine as well.

Regina Spektor, Sarah Slean, and Feist are three girls who are ridiculous songstresses. Feist's lyrics aren't too amazing, true, so many I'll toss her out.

Colin meloy from the Decemberists writes amazing stuff too. Listen to 'The Mariner's Revenge Song". it's straight out of ...well, those old sailor tale days.

of course there are, but in the midst of britney spears, fall out boy, ashlee simpson, and a bunch of disney stars who think they can sing, it's hard to believe.
i think paul banks, julian casablancas, and alex turner are all frickin brilliant lyricists.

hahahahaha...brittany spears amkes me laugh...her voice isn't even good, I was told its all computer done and that she can't even really sing!
Anyway, I think the lyrics or MCR are amazing! But I know a lot of people who would strongly disagree with me.

Hayley Williams LOL
Tom Delonge ROFL

I can't say I'm into acoutic and I reckon there are probably alot of good acoustic lyricists that I haven't heard of, but the best I've heard ever is Jesse Lacey. Tom Gabel, the lead singer of Refused (can't remember his name), Frank Turner and Billy Corgan aren't bad at all.

ben gibbard of death cab for cutie, the postal service, and all time quarterback.

he's my all time favorite!

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

simple yet brilliant.

who cares?
