Legs McNeil, John Holstrom, and Ged Dunn made Punk Magazine. It was about the underground music scene in New York, which would eventually be called punk rock. They wanted this magazine to be for people who were screw ups, had a thing for transvestites, got shitfaced every night, and get venereal dieseases every couple of weeks. They didn't know what to call such a magazine...after years of being called dumb little punks who ruined a small town in Michigan, they went with Punk. They posted flyers everywhere saying "Punk is coming! Punk is coming!". No one knew what punk was. Everyone was so excited. In their first issue, they interviewed Lou Reed, in their second: Patti Smith and Television, and in the third: The Ramones. Those people were the first people who were acknowledged as "punks", because they were in Punk Magazine after all. So the bands that came after The Ramones, Television, Iggy, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, and The New York Dolls that claim to be punk like Green Day and Blink aren't.
Yes, the Ramones are considered "pop punk", but punk isn't the music, it's the way they lived their lives way before the term "punk" even exsisted. Having a mohawk doesn't make you punk. Putting studs on everything you own doesn't do that either. Wearing a ballarina costume, and rolling around in glass after you take a handful of angel dust doesn't make you punk, despite the fact that Iggy did it first. You can't say youre punk because you listen to the music that's labeled "punk". Big effing deal. You listen to Television. Yay! You're a punk now because you know who Patti Smith is AND you have a mohawk!
Jeeze. I'm sick of people who say they're punk because of the way they look, or what they listen to. Punk is the way you live your life. The first, and only real punks would do anything just to get a dime of cocaine. Got so drunk that they'd strip naked, pee on some transvestite, get some dope, and then go have sex with them. That's what punk was. Punk is dead because people are trying to hard to do what they did. You can't copy people, you have to do your own thing, but not to be called punk, you do it cuz that's the way you are. Iggy didn't shave off his eyebrows and douse his body in glitter so he could be callled punk. He did it because he wanted to.

i believe that its the fashion and lifestyle

Rebellious. The Clash. R.I.P. Joe Strummer. It is a shame that these new artists call themselves Punk when they are whining about loosing a girlfriend. There is nothing Punk about that. Punk to me, is a form of being honest and being political in the sense of gaining and maintaing knowledge. That is Punk. Those that come on MTV today, are not Punk. Punk is about not giving a care what the media and government thinks of you, bad attitude in the good way, being aware of your surroundings and asking questions, fashionable and bieng different yet, not a trend follower.

Even Bob Marley loved The Clash. I guess great minds think alike.

Well, when I was younger and didn't know much I thought "punk" was about fashion. That thought has become less and less as of late, especially in today's music industry where anyone and everyone is considered punk just for dying their hair a different color or refusing to wear brand names, etc. If you look at Avril Lavigne when she first became popular, many people considered her punk -- that is definetly incorrect. She may have been punk in some of her fashion choices and public front, but not in music and/or lifestyle - I mean look at her now, surely she cannot be called punk anymore, if she ever was at all! So I do think it IS about day to day lifestyle and music - not just attitude, bravado, and fashion.

It's the attitude and lifestyle. Absolutely not fashion. It's anti-establishment, DIY music.

Attitude, fashion and lifestyle. Although mainly fashion/style to be honest, as that's the part that's still going strong today. And the punky people I know are absolutely lovely, so it isn't all badass or anything.

About doing what you like and not caring what people think about it.

And "Avril Lavigne" is NOT punk......The Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, are what punk is about.

truly punk its a lifestyle

Punk used to be a strong expression of your beliefs that dont agree with the media.

Now,people change their beliefs to be rebellious against the media. That isn't rebellion, that is letting the media control your life.

When Greenday wrote American Idiot, they were explaining how much stuff people do just to fit in, just to belong to a certain fad or wave. It isn't a bad thing, but people are giving up their beliefs just to be cool. If you stick with a style, you are cool.

That is what punk is about

where would punk be without the punk music? without the sex pistols and the ramones and the clash?

Rebel!!!!!! YEAH!!!!!
music against something or for some purpose
