To be honest, Jay Z (and Nas, and any other artist of this type) are caught in a tough situation, cuz their debut albums are classics, and people will *ALWAYS* compare his non-classic work to RD... its not fair, but it is what it is. So no, he didn't really progress too much as you might have liked/wanted him too, but like I said, when you have a debut like that, its really hard too... you set the bar up pretty high.

Jay Z made Reasonable Doubt in 1996. Through the time period of 2001-2003 he made Blueprint and Black Album & made one of the greatest diss songs of all time. In 2005, he was killing everybody that featured him on a song.
He's gotten better.
his last 2 albums have been horrible. so in my opinion hes gotten worse.

I LOVE Jay-Z, but lately some of his lyrical content seems to just rattle on aimlessly. He's still a solid lyricist, but some songs are skip-worthy, when before I could listen to the entire album.
