New Orleans

New Orleans

War of 1812 (battle of New Orleans). The battle actually took place after the war was over. A treaty had been signed, but word did not reach the troops in time. (No internet then.)

It is The Battle Of New Orleans by Johnny Horton. But i think you have some of your lyrics mixed up.My favorite part is where they grabbed an alligator and they powdered his behind.......& the gator lost his mind!...

G Pony, very good historical point (thumbs up). Also recall that this battle totally humiliated the British and gave rise to Andrew Jackson's becoming an early American icon which eventually led to his be elected President.

Oh.......about the song, you've good a lot of good answers to choose from. Yeh, Johnny Horton, also of "North to Alaska" fame, did this is 1959. It was a top 40 hit and received a lot of air time.

It is also quite true that Horton (or the lyricist) did borrow the melody from a much older tune.
