One of my favorites is Wishbone Ash. The twin guitar attack of Andy Powell and Ted Turner really were one of the first true hard rock twin guitar duos. After Ted left the band, he was replaced by former 'Home' guitarist Laurie Wisefield, among several others over the years...with Andy remaining.
Wishbone Ash have always been known for their twin sound!

Another early pioneer of the twin sound was 70's UK band 'Hookfoot'. Their debut album appeared in early 1971. Ian Duck and Caleb Quaye are both brilliant guitarists, and Caleb made great use of the Leslie, much like Joe Walsh. He's also a great acoustic player.
At times when the two of them use their twin lead attack they remind me of 'Wishbone Ash' a little. Very good band, and highly recommended if you like early 70's hard rock. Their music was a perfect fusion of hard rock, blues and jazz, done far better than many of their contemporaries at that time.
Hookfoot actually got their start as Elton Johns backing band in 1969/70 or thereabouts. But don't that fool you, because Hookfoot could really rock hard!

I also enjoyed Iron Maiden's Dave Murray and Adrian Smith, along with Judas Priests KK Downing and Glen Tipton.

Edit -
Wizbangs - Thin Lizzy never adopted a twin sound untill Gary Moore temporarily joined in 1974 on the Nightlife album, and prior to that it was all Eric Bell.
It wasn't until Scott Gorham joined the lineup in 1974/5 that the twin guitar sound began for Lizzy. Wishbone Ash, The Allman Brothers and a few others including The Grateful Dead had already been doing that for several years by that point.
When Gary Moore returned as a fulltime member in '76, his teaming with Scott was brilliant! That was my favorite Lizzy lineup. Gary Moore is a genius! Robo was cool too.
Thin Lizzy had a great twin sound, but they never started it.
Oh, and by the way...I wasn't the one that gave you thumbs down...LOL. Rock On!!

Personally I like KK Downing and Glen Tipton of Judas Priest.. And the guitarists from Nile.

Metallica - Hetfield & Hammett

i dont know.....aly and aj?

The ones who started it all:

Thin Lizzy
Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson.

Paul and John w/ a lot of George thrown in.

Listen to Coheed and Cambria The Final Cut At The Hammerstein Ballroom. the guitarists are Claudio sanchez and Travis steever. another good band is the eagles.

Ac Dc with Angus and Malcolm Young.

Herman Li and Sam Totman of dragonforce

Tesla's Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch!!

Slayer - King and Hanneman, hands down...

and Hetfield is a rythym guitarist except on "Nothing Else Matters"

For me it used to be Slash and Izzy from GNS. But now they split up.

Mustaine and Freedman (Megadeth), don't like Dave's tone but they both have talent.

Boston had quite a guitar team...

Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson of Thin Lizzy
One of the best examples is on the song 'Emerald'.

Suicidal Tendencies All The Way!

Dean Pleasants and Mike Clark

how about a tripple guitar team??
dave murary janick gerrs and adrian smith from iron maiden!!!
UP THE IRONS!!!!

Phil Demmel and Robb Flynn of Machine Head are awesome

Dave Mustaine & Marty Freidman- Megadeth

Jonathan Donais and Matt Bachand of Shadows Fall

without a doubt Thin Lizzy's duo of Gorham and Robertson.
even though they were not the first as wizbang seems to think, you need to study your music history a little before posting.

I would have to say Wishbone Ash -Andy Powell and Ted Turner 'cause they rock! Andy Powell is one great guitar player!

If your talking about duel, Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman (Slayer) always comes into my mind.

rudolf schenker and mathias jabs of the scorpions

Judas priest-Glenn Tipton &KK Downing

The Eagles on Hotel California
Doobie Brothers
Allman Brothers

i have to adjust the question a bit for my answer, as my favorite is the triple-guitar from lynyrd skynyrd with gary rossington, allen collins, and ed king/steve gaines

Spinal Tap

Thin Lizzy OWNS.
