How do I read guitar tabs when trying to learn chords?!

Question: I play the piano. I have been trying to learn to play some songs just by listening to the music. I thought I was getting it, but I checked the internet, and many of the chords are way off. Note that most of these sites were geared towards playing the songs on the guitar. Are these the same as I am hearing and guitar notation is just different, or is my ear off? When a chord sheet for a guitarist says play a C maj, does it mean play a C maj on the piano as well?

Guitar tabs are usually created by fans of the particular artist. It's very likely that they've got it wrong, or the chords are just different. Obviously, a C maj is the same whichever way you look at it, but a guitar can only play 6 strings simultaneously, with many notes being unreachable by the left hand while playing certain chords. As long as you think it sounds right, then play it that way!

yes it does
