I guess it really just depends on the personal tastes of the individual.
I find some emo music is great, while other times I really don't care for some at all.
As for the actual word "emo", it does not stand for "emotional". "Emo" stands for "emotive hardcore" which is a genre spun off from hardcore punk, the main diference being that the subject of the lyrics are usually more personal, instead of the often political and/or anti-establishment lyrics associated with punk.
And just to add, "emo" is not a fashion or clothing style, as many people mistake it for. The tight pants/eyeliner/hair thing is called "scene style" or "fashion core", and has absolutely nothing to do with music, it is a conscientious fashion choice.

NAY

nay

nay

If you mean bands like Deftones, then Yay.

Music that isn't about wearing skinny jeans, growing insanely long fringes or about how terrible it is not to be understood in this horrible life being lived is not classed as emo in my books.

I think that most EMO music sounds the same, at least to my ears. I also think that the whole "I don't care" look and attitude is boring.

EMO: White teens who have been handed everything and have nothing to be upset about, so their rage turns into a deep depression about having nothing to be depressed about.

NAY
most emo bands these days put more effort into their hairstyle than the actual music, or at least thats what it seems like. They have nothing to be sad about. I bet half of them are only sad because they can't fit into their sister's jeans. pathetic. grow the f!ck up.

and demonhunter, the deftones arent emo.

Nay. NAY! A thousand times, nay!!

A big huge NAY. Contrary to popular belief, emotion has always been a part of music long before MCR plagued the Earth. There's nothing inherently wrong with making music about "problems and struggles." The difference is that the acronym bands consist of corporate manufactured angst that attempts to exaggerate the stereotypes of youth. It seems like music that encourages one to be depressed when otherwise there would be no good reason.

NAYYYYYY.
definitely.
why would u wanna listen to ppl singing negatively about life?
NAY.
don't like.
:/

i think no one should claim themselves as emo or label others as emo because emo is not actually a genre, it is more of a theme of a song. any genre can be emotional, whether it is jazz, rock, pop, r and b and so on.if you will put these bands that are so called "emo" in a genre, they will fall under punk/hardcore.

nay

some songs are fine but like you said most of it a big nay

NAY NAY.

well i like all types of music, so it's yay

Nay!!!

Well Yay
Because It sort of sometimes does explain how your feeling sometimes and some songs do that,
Like Simple Plan.

emo isn't music, this should be in polls and surveys, anyways...i say nay

nayyyy

Nay, I think it sucks donkey feet.
