Part of it has to do with having lived in western Kentucky (where Travis was from), in the coal mining areas, where I saw firsthand the lemmings, for want of a better term, following their fathers and grandfathers into that hellish life such as Travis describes in the spoken introduction. For the most part, however, it is the lyrics that paint a picture of life in the mines as vividly -- more so! -- as any video could.
"Like a fiend with his dope and a drunkard his wine / A man will have lust for the lure of the mine" is simply one of the best lines ever written by anyone in any genre of music.

I would have to say Sunday Morning Cmon Down. The lyrics that Kris wrote are so powerful. The man is a genius. You can feel the lonliness in every word.

Hmmm...my favorite? Oh, gosh, I don't think I could get it down to just one. Mama Tried, Angel Flying to Close to the Ground, Luckenbach, Tx, & Mama's Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys (although I wish more would!) are probably among my top 20 though!
