right epiphone, many people underestamate them coz there relatively low priced, but there basically a gibson but without the name, Gibsons are good, however well over priced, and not that much better than the epiphones, in the end ur just paying for the name. all depends on genre your playing, epiphone for all sorts, jackson/ibanez for metal

I saved up my money and went to Guitar Center and bought a Epiphone Les Paul for $345 and fell in love with it, but if you don't want something that expensive, I would go to your local Pawn shop and buy a guitar thats probably around $145-250 price range. I bought my first guitar from a pawn shop and learned the basics before I bought my Les Paul so you may want to start out on acoustic first.

A Mexican-made Fender Stratocaster will be your best bet. It's got a great sound that everyone likes to use, it's versatile, it's a comfortable guitar to play, and the Mexican-made version is cheaper than the American-made. If you buy it new you can get it cheaper than $300 if you haggle. Ibanez guitars are cheap too but I would go with the guitarist's standard!

Usually the two sounds you might want are humbucker sounds like a Gibson Les Paul or single coil sounds like the Fender Stratocaster.
The cheaper versions are Epiphone Les Paul (humbuckers) or Squier Stratocaster (single coils).
The next more expensive versions would be high end Epiphones/low end Gibsons (humbuckers) and low end Fenders made in Mexico/low end Fender made in USA.
Without knowing price range, the kind of music you want to play, your favorite guitar sounds/players, etc. that's the best info I can give you.

rexnezzy... is correct. Get a Mexican-made Fender Stratocaster to start with. Very versatile and rather well-made for the price. Plus all the COOL people play Fenders. Gibsons are for nerds.

Well I have an Epiphone Gold Top and a Mexican Fender and I like them both. I have to agree that the Mexican Strat or Tele is a hard to beat deal at about $399. Personally I think they area better deal than the American assembled models at around a grand.
