It explains the man's feelings that the woman he loves is smothering him with her means of attention, and the man must keep moving.
I don't think it serves a purpose per se...but it's just a classic rock tune with one of the greatest guitar solos of all time in it. I think the whole purpose of music is to entertain, sometimes enlighten. And if a song makes you put your worries on hold for the duration of it...then it's served it purpose.
