Are Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Foo Fighters alternative rock or grunge?!
Question: Nirvana was grunge, Alice... was a grunge band whit some metal fusion, and i consider Foo Figthers like Post-grunge..

i tend to not like genres and sub-genres, but they do sometimes serve a purpose. grunge is a sub-genre of alternative music.
Depends on who you ask, really. I'd say they're both.
nirvana was grunge, Alice I Chains was a grunge to alt shift and foo fighters is alternative rock.
No grunge isn't the same.. Grunge was developed in Seattle in the 90's and Nirvana was pretty much the root of it all. alternative and grunge can go hand in hand, but are different classifications. Say like... there's rap.. then "gansta' rap" you wouldn't call Will Smiths stuff "gansta rap" ya know?
As far as Foo Fighters, i guess you could say they are a bit of both.. Being that Dave Grohl was the drummer for nirvana, but as we know formed Foo Fighters. Grunge kinda died awhile back sad to say.... But then again i guess really this kinda could be a debateable question, so i'd like to hear what others think.

Nirvana were the beggining of grunge, Alice in Chains are also quite grunge based, in between grunge and alternative leaning slightly toward grunge. While Foo Fighters are alternative rock. So you got yourself a nice mix there.
Nirvana is Grunge, Alice in Chains is Grunge and Foo Fighters are more of an Alternative Rock.
Nirvana and AIC are pretty much grunge. Foo is Alt. Rock
Nirvana is grunge for sure. Alice In Chains played a different form of grunge using acoustic guitars or heavy distortion. Foo Fighters' first one or two albums can be called grunge but barely. After that they developed a polished sound but not polished enough to be called post grunge. That was alternative rock. Now they do post grunge for sure tho (the pretender).
Grunge is a sub genre of alt rock. Post grunge i consider as hard rock. Alternative Rock is rock that sounds different from other stuff. Today Bands like nickelback and daughtry are labelled alternative. But u should notice they sound the same along with a lot of others. These are post grunge. i m not sayng they are not good/ talented. Live, Bush, Three Days Grace are good post grunge bands but i would label them as hard rock.

Alternative Rock has many sub genres. Grunge is just one of them. Others include Madchester which has a low slighly dissonant sound, shoegazing which has very soft almost inaudible vocals and distorted guitars, and britpop which draws from classic rock and folk.
i'd say nirvana is grunge but alice in chains and the foo's arn't really that 'heavy' so they are alternative for the main reason that they change their sound in songs as where nirvana didn't ...=D
