Does anyone else think heavy metal should be a genre, not a rock sub genre?!

Heavy Metal is the only music that IS music. There's no genre or sub-genre about it.

There are so many sub-genres today it's hard to catogorize it all as it's own so they shove it in one area. Rock is just the root from where it came from, It's all from a long time line.
I think it is already classified as its own genre depending on the music groups you find it in. Sometimes it is a subgenre and sometimes its not. If it isnt then i think it should be.

sorry dude - it's heavy rock music, thus heavy metal. and, the peek of metal was late 80's-early 90's, so we are like 20 years past that. So, we're not going to go back and change it now.
I can't believe some of my fav Maiden tracks were written 40 years ago...
anyway, think about this.. metal started with bands like Black Sabbath in the 70's... that wasn't technically heavy metal... so, there's just way too much out there to move "heavy metal" out on it's own.. IMO.. later

there is no way metal can be in a rock category, metal has its own types Thrash,speed and etc....hard rock couldnt touch the metal...
Heavy Metal IS a genre to itself--just like Pop (yechhh!!), Soft Rock, Southern Rock ( "I can't find mah plate!!" )....etc. The only SUB genre of metal are the "hair" band versions of metal (Poison, Warrant). And of course, one is their own judge as to which bands are originals and corporate mainstreams.
I also call for "alternative" to be a sub, sub, sub and deservedly forgotten rock genre, that deserves a death like Disco.
Well, it is a derivative of Rock. So think of it like a tree with branches.
Not "heavy metal" There are many sub-genres.. and sub-genres, upon sub-genres, to define music a little finer.

Grindcore
Melodic metal
Toughcore
Industrial metal
Nu-metal
Speed metal
Doom metal
Gothic metal
I mean, need I go on? Those are there to help us identify with eachother, to understand more about what we are talking about. I mean, each of those sub-genres are completely different, if you just say "heavy metal", it becomes really vague and broad.. because "heavy metal" means all those I just listed as well..
Yes, part of me wants to say no but Heavy Metal is often claimed by the lamest of bands and good metal has often been found in some songs of the least metallic.
Even age is affecting some of my views. Some of the Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath sound tamer than AC/DC and Iron Maiden in which some sound tamer than, Metallica, Judas Priest, Mega Death, in which some sound tamer than Korn or Killswitch...etc and what do you do with bands like KISS, Poison, Motley Crue, Scorpions, that hit certain levels.
Hell, some people think all the bands listed above are quite tame compared to some of the Metal where i couldn't understand what was being screamed. Perhaps Heavy Metal needs it own genre so we can sub categorize it.

no because it has many charcteristics of other rock genres. also the drums are perty close to the same tunning
Heavy Metal is the GENRE man. All those sub-genre you mentioned all spawned from Heavy Metal.
