Did Public Enemy influenced more rock groups than rap groups?!

Question: In my opinion, I think they influence more rock groups because of Bring the Noise featuring Antrax. That influence groups like Linkin Park and Rage Against the Machine.

No.

IMO, you're perspective is too focused on the musical elements used by PE & ignores the influence PE's musical message had on the hip hop culture.

Think back to their peak. Their was a black pride movement occuring that was very prevelent in our popular culture. Granted, it was heavily commercialized, and lacked the substance of PE's true message. But, their influence on rap groups, & the hip hop culture was 2nd to none even if many of those perpetuating the message didn't grasp it fully, truly represent it, or understand it's origins.

I don't think there's any question RATM (my all time favorite band) was heavily influenced by PE or is the single band or artist most similiar to PE across the board.

But, you are discounting the influence PE had on artists from Queen Latifa to De La Soul simply because their music didn't sound similiar to PE's. With respect to their influence on the hip hop culture, I would go so far as to suggest PE's message was the shoulders Spike Lee stood upon.

I would take that a step further and suggest that the influence of rap music in this PE inspired era manifested itself in Neo Soul after the rap game became commercialized and lost it.

It would also be neglegent imo not to mention that PE was very cutting edge with their fusion of rock elements in their music long before their colabo with Antrax, as was Run DMC before their colabo with Aerosmith. I could go on about their musical influence on rap and hip hop with respect to original beats & live music, but I think you got the gist.

they have influenced many musicians- i'm sure in the rap community as well.

No...No...No...Public Enemy influenced the Hip Hop community more than Metal...everything has been effected by Hip Hop it is apart of everything...Judgement Night Cd did more for the variety of rap metal along with Ice-T in Body Count...also Faith No More used to blend the two genres nicely...

i think they influenced rock more too. is that good or bad?

I agree with you they did influence more rock of coarse

Sean C, that is seriously one of the best answers I've seen on here. I don't think I can add anything you haven't already said, so I'll just cosign.

(btw, PE's influence went beyond music for me. This white girl from Scotland would have grown up very ignorant of black issues if it wasn't for Mista Chuck and co educating me.)
