Hip Hop Artist Comparison Vol. 1- Big L. vs Lupe Fiasco?!

Question: Thanks to the Yahoo Community, I thought it would be cool that I express my thoughts on different rappers and who I feel is better in a weekly Hip Hop Comparison Thread. We state who we feel is better everyday but I will go in depth with this one. Today, the thread is dedicated to:
Lupe Fiasco and Big L.

First off, it is because of you all that I listened to Big L in the first place so I should say, thank you. They are easy to compare because they both have two cd's.

Big L made the song Ebonics and it is amazing lol. That song though made me think of a song that Lupe Fiasco made, which is also dedicated to a certain topic.

The winner is Lupe Fiasco

The two both have flow and know how to play well with words. One thing I see as a flaw with Lupe is even though he doesnt show it (and I could be wrong) he looks to me to be obnoxious when making music. The song "Dumb It Down" was lyrically great but I ask so many ppl why would you make a song that nly you can translate? You got millions of ppl saying your hot because they feel if they listen to Lupe, they are listening to real Hip Hop. Thats riddiculous.

Lupe and Big L. have had their share of storytellers.

Big L-The Heist

Lupe Fiasco-The Die
http://youtube.com/watch?v=09hgQknmcZc

The winner is Big L.

Lupe Fiasco makes a cd full of stories. They paint pictures in my mind for me. Big L made maybe two or three songs like that but brought the lyrics to them no doubt.

Overall I look at the two like this. Lupe Fiasco made an okay album (Food And Liquor) and dramtically (And I mean dramatically lol.) stepped his game up with The Cool. I have heard both Big L cd's. Lifestylez Of Da Poor & Dangerous by you guys have been deemed as a classic and I cant see how. The lyrics are okay but I can listen to that cd one time and will not miss it. I think The Big Picture was better than Lifestylez, with the main flow being all the guest artists.

The main separation between the two.....
VARIETY!!!

Big L has the same style throughout all his work!!! He says the same thing over and over. ("Harlem" "F*ck Ho*s" "139") and etc. He spits the same topics over different beats. He has no classic album to me. He is not a legend in my eyes. OUTSIDE OF YOU ALL, I have never heard anyone say, "Big L is great." I think he gets so much praise because of you know what (I dont even have to say it).

Could Big L have made an Intruder Alert? American Terrorist?
Little Weapon?

I dont think so. Winner of this battle is LUPE FIASCO.

Originally I was not going to answer because I do not listen to Big L or Lupe but one thing i thought you hit the nail on da head with was Big L is considered great because he died. I have listened to some of his songs and they are average his dieing raised what people thought. I also have never heard anyone outside of here say Big L is great. Anyway I like the Idea of comparison. I was trying to start that with my toss ups.

lmao @ you thinking Lupe Fiasco even deserves to be compared to L

cosign, almost everything you said

another thing I think Lupe has going for him is beat selection: he has some really dope tracks on both cds

my personal breakdown:
Lyrics: Lupe
Flow: Big L
Voice: close but Big L
Beats: Lupe
Versatility: Lupe
Originality: Lupe
Body of Work: Lupe (personally thought F&L and The Cool are both top 30 albums *thumbs down* and his mixtapes were straight ill)

co sign with machaveli
there is NO comparsion
big L- top 25 greates MCs of all time
Lupe- doesnt break top 50
EDIT: ok u want me to explain
Big L- 1 classic CD and a 4 star CD
Lupe- No Classic CD, no 4 star CD
Big L- Far more creativity, flow, vocabulary, better story teller..ect
the only thing lupe beats him on is social message... and the thing is, im a big fan of lupe, and i like both of hid CDs a lot, and i think he has talent, a lot, but it makes me sick when ppl try and compare good rappers to great legends, like lil wayne to jay z.... just like lupe fiasco to big L, theres no comparison
u can like whoever u want better thats fine, but when it comes to straight up skill, big L murders lupe fiasco
EDIT: and oh yeah, your right, im a f*cken 12 year old who listens to Rakim and Kool G Rap, cuz that makes a lot of sense right?

ur an idiot eason

how can the guy who created the style that lupe is using be less of an MC?

that makes no sense..

if L wouldnt have gotten killed u would be ridin his dik instead of Lupes all the time u moron

EBONICS TOOK TWO YEARS TO WRITE AND CONTAINS LINGO FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY IN IT!!!

lupes song isnt even close to being in the same category

THE BIG PICTURE WAS DONE AFTER L DIED WITH ZERO INPUT FROM FINESSE!!
RAWKUS WANTED TO MAKE SOME CHIPS!!!
HOW CAN U COMPARE AN ALBUM WITH ZERO INPUT FROM THE ARTIST TO A CONCEPT ALBUM AZZ!!!

since L has sooo many more songs than the ones on those albums methinks u dont care enough to find em

how can i make it, school dayz, games females play, times is hard...why am i even writing em down when its obvious u made up ur mind...

now i remember why i hate u so much

cuz u smell like wack MC

lupe is good but to knock a dead guy and compare the two u should really burn for that

naw i just respect the originators of thsi rap ish and hang out with djs

L>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Lupe

not even a comparison

all u surburban living fools jockin Lupe crack me up...

First of all, great breakdown...you didnt just say who was better, you broke it down into songs, styles, etc. After thoroughly goin thru, i think im gonna have to co-sign this thread...i see u uspet the Big L Banshees, but like i said, good thread, and way to back up your opinion

This was a really good post. I agree. Big L was a great rapper, but I'm just not sure if he would be getting this much praise if he was still alive.

Ok i like the way you compared them..ok so lets see..

-First off, it is because of you all that I listened to Big L in the first place so I should say, thank you. They are easy to compare because they both have two cd's:
Big l only had one while he was alive, the other was posthumous,it wasn't even done when he died.

Big L made the song Ebonics and it is amazing lol. That song though made me think of a song that Lupe Fiasco made, which is also dedicated to a certain topic:
Ebonics vs Coulda been
Ebonics was a big success for him,and this song introduced him to a lot of people.Lupe wasn't noticed till he appeared on "Touch the sky" with Kanye west...The wordplay in ebonics is better too...Big L wins this one

Lupe Fiasco makes a cd full of stories. They paint pictures in my mind for me. Big L made maybe two or three songs like that but brought the lyrics to them no doubt:

its not necessary to have a cd full of stories,is it?

Big L has the same style throughout all his work!!! He says the same thing over and over. ("Harlem" "F*ck Ho*s" "139") and etc.He spits the same topics over different beats:
But rap is not about characters, every rapper has his own style in rapping.

He has no classic album to me : sorry but i consider lifestylez ov da poor & dangerous one of the top 5 albums of all time.

OUTSIDE OF YOU ALL, I have never heard anyone say, "Big L is great." I think he gets so much praise because of you know what (I dont even have to say it):
Not sure what your sayin, cuz he is dead? Well u dont know if he would've been more successful if he didn't die.

Well...good breakdown, though I would have to disagree on Ebonics (this is a genius song, but hey, it's a matter of personal taste).

All in all though, good thread. You backed up your argument well and with supporting facts. Simply saying that it's a 5 mic classic (Rakim) doesn't immediately make one guy better than the other.

And while I would agree that Lupe does have more variety than Big L, Lupe does not have the punchlines, multies, nor the storytelling and freestyle ability that Big L brings to the table. And with songs like The Heist, Devil's Son, and Ebonics, Big I personally find more entertaing than Lupe.

At the same time though, Lupe just released an album, and he is, undeniably, one of the best in the mainstream, which inevitably makes him much more appealing than someone who released one official album 10 years ago.

This thread is your opinion, I respect that...I'm down with Lupe, and I'm down with Big L.

yall gettin real heated over someone's opinion...does it really matter who we think is better??? Is it gonna find the cure for AIDS or make us live till we are 300??...NO...so yall need to calm down and let it go.....its just
E-sons opinion and that doesn't mean you all are gonna agree and it doesn't mean you are gonna change his mind either.

And I am sure you all know this

But it wouldn't hurt to at LEAST be open to each others opinions

lmao at brwn sidekickin u know i got lve for u but yeah the breakdown is sick u know i respect that u gave ur opinion and didnt change it cause some people didnt agree with u

Lupe Fiasco
his lyrics are just amazing they make you think about what hes talking about and he puts so much intelligenec into each and every verse. listen to his underground stuff thats really good. "And he gets the Girl" is classic. not his best though. ive got about 150 underground lupe songs haha im kinda opsessed with him

I think Big L is better. He is more street orientated in his raps and thats what hip hop is all about, it was started on the streets, and Lupe does not have that sort of hardcore appeal in his lyrics. Don't get me wrong I am a fan of Lupe, but I think he has a feminine personality compared to Big L. I also think that Big L had better word play with his lyrics. Big L may have only rapped about Harlem etc, but that was what he was used to, Lupe spends his time writing about skateboards and I never heard a rhyme about skating from anyone like KRS-One, MC Shan, Nas etc.

p.s. Lupe can't even skate. He already got dissed by that other dude from Long Beach cuz all he did was one trick in that video.
