What number originally was Dvoraks symphony no 9?!

Question: 11 points for first correct answer

Answers: 11 points for first correct answer

number 5

It was always Symphony No.9 - "From The New World" ! ! !
and don't worry about the points..........

You're right, it was originally called the 5th symphony. Here's why:

"After Dvo?ák's death, research uncovered four unpublished symphonies, of which the manuscript of the first had even been lost to the composer himself. This led to an unclear situation in which the New World Symphony has alternately been called the 5th, 8th and 9th."

Wikipedia

I've performed the piece using a few different editions of the sheet music, and they've had different numbers for the titles. It can be confusing.

Many of Dvo?ák's earlier works were lost for several years, including the first four symphonies. Of the five that were published in his lifetime, they were not necessarily published in the order that he wrote them. This is often a point of great confusion with Dvo?ák's works, not least the symphonies, whereby some early works have higher opus numbers than works written much later.

When they were originally published, the five symphonies that weren't lost were released in the following order:

No 1 in D major Op 60 (later No 6)
No 2 in D minor Op 70 (later No 7)
No 3 in F major Op 76 (later No 5)
No 4 in G major Op 88 (later No 8)
No 5 in E minor Op 95 (From the New World)(later No 9)

When the first four symphonies were rediscovered, it became necessary to review the numbering of Dvo?ák's symphonies, so the original Nos 1-5 became 5-9, although when the re-numbering occured, they were numbered in the order they were composed, rather than in order of the misleading opus numbers (assigned to them at the time of publication). So, No 9 used to be known for many years as No 5.

It's a bit confusing but I hope this makes sense.
