What is/was your family's opinion of your music?!

Question: my dad absolutley hates mine, but he doesn't say anything, unless i'm playing a song that' all screaming
my mom can't stand it, and usually doesn't let me play it through speakers
my brothers just run around trying to imitate it (they're in fourth grade)

so what's your family's opinion of your music? do you follow in their footsteps and have similar taste? do your siblings like the same stuff? or do they all run screaming from the room?

I was born in the early 60's and came from a very musical family. My Mother was a classically trained pianist and my Dad was a Church Choir Director/ Western Swing Guitarist. They grew up in the "Golden" Era of Music before Rock and Roll. When Rock came along and "Killed" their kind of music, i.e. Cole Porter, Gershwin, for my Mom and Western Swing/Cowboy Jazz for my Dad, they had a profound distaste of anything that resembled Rock & Roll. "Why are they Screaming?"...."Why are those drums so loud?", "Why do they say 'Baby' all the time?" , "Why is that guitar making that sound?"...things like this, which still apply today. Keep in mind that the divide was so vast. Popular music essentially went from Bing Crosby and Doris Day to Elvis and the Beatles within the span of a little over a decade. So when I came home with "Inna Gadda Da Vida" by Iron Butterfly or "Caress of Steel" by Rush and tried to play it on the family stereo, ya gotta imagine the size of their eyeballs. I guess what I'm trying to say is my parents thought Elton John was today's equivilent of Marylyn Manson. So be glad your parents can at least SORT of identify with SOME of what you listen to! Quick story: When Queen's "A Night at the Opera" came out, our church Pastor and his wife were visiting for Sunday dinner. I had left my Eight-Track in the player from the night before. When my Dad asked me to put some "Dinner" music on, I walked over to the stereo, turned it on before I noticed the volume control was on 10, and out of the speakers roared "And now you can kiss....My *** Goodbye!..." from 'Death on Two Legs' by Queen. You could imagine the scene...This was a Southern Baptist preacher, btw. Wow...Anyway, things have changed. Now, my kids are inundated with lots of stuff I'd rather them not hear, but I do find that there's still a tremendous amount of superb New Music and Artists out there. We just have to dig a little deeper. I think it's cool that "Guitar Hero" has my kids digging through my collection to hear the original versions. Things never really change, though. I still dig out "The Sons of the Pioneers" and listen to "Rhapsody in Blue" or "Begin the Beguine" from Gershwin and Porter, so I suppose the stream never quits trickling...

No one in my family really cares... They just listen to what they like. My parents aren't really old fashioned. They really don't care if my music is loud or has screaming. Possibly because I never listen to my music loud around them.

A quote from my Mum..."Its just all fornication"

my mom hates my music, but sometimes i can get her to like something.
and my mom recognises EVERY red hot chili peppers song in the world because of me.

my dad doesn't really like my music either, but we like some of the same artists, like, bob dylan and police.

my sister is still into "tween" music, but she likes the red hot chili peppers (my favourite band) but is SICK of hearing them all the time.

EDIT: my mom prays the red hot chili peppers die, to put an end to her "misery". she's joking though! hahah.

Oh boy. My parents hate most of my stuff, which is why I have to keep headphones by the computer. My dad once said, while driving down the road, "you see that? I sped up...I can't get away from this!"

My mom doesn't really try to understand it, I'm surprised she can even hear it over her complaining.

My sister tries to deal with it to be nice, and my brother likes it. They don't live here anymore though, they're in different states. But, we're all close anyway. None of them are as passionate about music as I am.

I remember being a teen in the 80s and my mom storming in my room one day asking me if I had any AC/DC because she was gonna throw it away b/c she heard it meant anti-christ/devils child...lol....of course I had Back in BLack, For Those About to Rock, and Flick of the Switch....She couldn't stand my Slayer, Megadeth, and Metallica t-shirts either.

My dad and I listen to all the same music. We go shopping at music stores all the time and then drive around rocking out to what we bought. He is the only one I know who is into music to the same extent that I am (other than the people I've met on R&P). We go to all the rock concerts together and have an awesome time. When we get together, all we ever talk about is music and dirtbikes. Those are both of our obsessions lol.

As for my mom, she just isn't into music. How is that possible? Good question...

My mom can't stand 95% of the music that I listen to...

My dad hates it all...

My brother likes most of it...

My parents don't seen to like the music that I like but, they are to stubborn to even listen to the lyrics of a song...

no one has a problem with my music Alternative, actually my mom listens to it, but my dad is into weird crap like Frank Zappa and the blues, and my sister is into country which i hate, and my 2 brothers are into classic rock, but what we do is once a week we all sit down and listen to whos ever it's turn is and listen to their music, but the rest of the week my mom has on the same music we both like, which is cool cause we share cd's. its also cool that when going to a concert my parents go with and even though dad is not into that music, i see him rocking lol...

I have pretty much the same musical taste as my sister - we both like most genres (especially rock), the only real difference is that I listen to country and she doesn't. She mocks me for that, but I just mock her right back about bands she likes that I don't.

My dad likes rock music too, but he's more about the old stuff than the modern stuff, which is what I listen to. He thinks his music libraries better than mine. Which is kind of obvious or he'd have my music library and not his, so I don't really know why I said that.

My mum's into old disco and soul stuff. She doesn't really like my music, but she doesn't ridicule it because I don't ridicule hers. Some of it's good.

Everybody in my family makes fun of the music that everybody else likes. My dad thinks all the music I like sounds the same, but I think the same thing about his music, so I guess we're even! :D

My Mam likes stuff like Elton John, Motown, Rod Stewert, which really isn't my kinda thing, although she does like the odd awesome song, for example, her alltime favourite song is Good Riddance by Green Day, and i like the odd song from her choice of music.
My Dad is an avid music fan and he has an enormously varied taste. He's pretty awesome tbh, he likes stuff like My Chemical Romance, The Smashing Pumpkins, Panic At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, Bright Eyes, but then there's stuff like Morrissey & The Smiths, Echo And The Bunnymen, Madness, The Cure and there's even stuff like Maiden and Metallic that he likes the song of.
My Stepmother likes Blink-182 & Sum 41.
Then there's my sister. She's two. She loves Green Day =7
She also likes Panic At The Disco and knows the words to parts of I Write Sins which is super cute when she sings it.
Although, her favourite ever song is Green Green Grass of Home by Tom Jones which she sings ALL the freakin time!!

lol good question, sorry my answer was so long, i got carried away!

Are you sure we don't have the same family?

My dad doesn't like it, but is somewhat tolerant of it.

My mom absolutely hates it, she says its "obnoxious."

My 14 year old brother says its not music, and it makes his "ears bleed" (ahh, but I take them to school in MY car, so who has control of the tunes?? Me!)

My 8 year old brother kinda likes it, he calls it all screamo though, even if there is no screaming, like Angels and Airwaves. I will be taking this kid to his first show soon.

And last but not least, my 2 year old sister loves to dance to it, and I am currently trying to teach her to hardcore dance and pig squeal...

they could care less my mom listens to the same music..
we listen to Chimaira, Lamb Of God, and all kinds of hardcore ****

My daughters love it. My oldest are at war because she "borrows" my CDs. My sister hates it. She likes country.

When I lived at home my mom hated just about everything I blared through my speakers and was always griping and complaining, which didn't stop me, of course lol. Her all time favorites were Metallica and Rush. Playing them on full volume usually shortened the flip-o-meter considerably =)

My mom hates it, she thinks the people at concerts are ******* crazy or something. So I just don't tell her and go to concerts with my dad

My parents don't like it at all. They think its too loud and noisy. My dad ask me one time to listen to my headphones and i was listening to TDWP and he heard like 5 seconds of it and just shakes his head and says "you can't even understand what they are saying".

My twin sister is into screaming music. She just rolls her eyes and says "what are you listening to this time".

My 13 year old nephew thinks TDWP music is scary. My 5 year old nephew and 2 year old nephew like to dance to my music.

My mom hates the music I listen to and she says that screaming isn't talent. So I pretty much blast music with the most screaming in my stereo and she won't come in my room. My dad isn't even aware of the kind of music I listen to. My brother's taste in music is pretty similar to mine.

My mom is apathetic towards my taste in music. Though, my dad and I do share a similar taste. He likes more metal than I do, but we still like a lot of the same artists.

My Mom thought all Rock Music came straight from Satan.
My Dad hates Rock Music and only listens to Classical.

HAHAHAHA...this is an awesome question.

My mom doesn't mind my music, but it reminds me of my friend...my friend and I loved to listen to sum 41 when we were little girls...and her mom thought any rock music was sung by satan worshippers...

*laughs*

This question just made my day by reminding me of those good old days...

even though I hate when people say that about rock music...ugh...

Yeah, we have similar tastes like jazz, classical, contemporary pop, but they can't stand hard rock. It really was a problem when I was young and a student. But now that I'm grown up, done with school and earning, they don't mind much anymore. But yeah, I'm still frowned upon from time to time because of that.

Well, I started off having the same musical tastes as my dad and then I went the complete opposite end of the spectrum and then returned to my roots, but made them heavier.
My mother can't stand it. She screams at me to turn it off, especially if it has screaming in it, which is mostly all of it.
My dad can sort of stand it but usually ends up asking "What kind of sh!t do you listen to?"

But yeah, they hate what I listen to. If I had siblings they'd probably hate it too. And I bet if they had the chance, they'd run around screaming.

my parents hate my music (hardcore and metal).. they think it's satanic!! hell no it isnt!!! (well only some)
my older sister likes it but shes more into other type of music (reggeaton)
my liltle sister makes fun of how they scream (5th grader <whos into hannah montana *yuck*>)

Whenever my younger siblings spend the weekend, they will raid my music collection whilst I'm asleep, and when I wake up...they've memorized the lyrics to all sorts of morbid songs that they really shouldnt know. It is hilarious when my mother comes to pick them up, and they start singing...hehe.

My music scares my mom.
I usually wear headphones if I'm listening to something around her.

My dad actually likes some of it...But for the most part, he is too drunk, high, and distracted to notice whatever it is I'm blaring.

My 2 older sisters...They actually like a few bands. But my 2nd older sister thinks most of it is weird. My oldest sister understands though, because we're alot alike.
Hehehe, and my 11 month old niece headbangs to my music!!

My family I hate what I listen to sometimes my mom can stand it but most of the time she can't.My sisters I hate it also.I personally don't care
