What are the four traits of classical music?!

Question: I'm supposed to look it up for my humanities class to answer a test question, but it's not in my book and I can't find it on the web. Can anyone help? This is my last resort.

I have no idea which 'four traits' your humanities class is after. I could only make a guess at melody, harmony, rhythm and form. It sounds a bit like this is something you were supposed have made a note of in class.

I'm guessing you mean instrumentation, complexity, form & technical execution, and society.

The term "classical" in today's world, is comparable to that of "antique": sad, but true.

What are the "traits" of an antique? It usually must be old, of significant and usually great value, possess beauty, and most important of all, retains its appeal: endures.

All of the above traits can be applied to what is most commonly referred to as "classical" music; not "modern", jazz, pop, Dixieland or what have you.

Am I a "musical snob"? You betcha.

I have never heard of "traits" of classical music, but music has four basic characteristics:

rhythm, melody, harmony and tone color (timbre)

Not all music has all four (drum solo may not have melody or harmony, and single melody line may have no harmony).

For classical music, I would say its traits are complexity, formality of structure, wide range of tone color and large dynamic range. Again not all classical music will exhibit all of these traits.

ornamental,
usually expressing an idea or emotion,
counterpoint
