Guitar notes...?!

Question: I got a guitar for my birthday today, and I'm a little confused by the notes. I've played violin for 8 years, and I know a lot about music, and the bottom 4 strings on a 6 string guitar are the same as a violin (G D A E) except in reverse order. On a violin, the interval between each string is a 5th, but on a guitar it is a 6th, why is this?

The strings on a traditional six string guitar are
from lowest to highest E A D G B E.
(once learned to remember eagle ate david good boy eagle)
the interval between each is a fourth for some and a third between G and B.
Each fret raises the pitch half a step.

It may have something to do with the contortions one would have to go through to play chordal work .... :-) but the history of the instrument is not my forte.
Hope that helps...

Its not...
