The song is Drums. Like The Ballad of Ira Hayes, it told of the white man's abuse of the Native Americans, not a popular theme. Only certain social causes are popular, and not always the right ones.

If you want an mp3 of either, I know I can furnish The Ballad of Ira Hayes and maybe Drums.

"The Ballad of Ira Hayes"?? (maybe)

The song was the ballad of ira hayes. i am not for sure why it was but it is kind of a bad image for the indians.(dont quote me on this because i am not for sure)

i think they said it was racist

'the ballad of ira hayes' was about a native american soldier who was part of the flag raisin' at iwo jima durin' world war II...

johnny's song was very critical of the way the american government treated native american soldiers in particular and war in general...

country stations wouldn't play the song in fear of alienatin' their fans...

johnny then took out a full page ad in many of the trade magazines blastin' the stations for bein' gutless...

Ballad of Ira Hayes;Because of the words Call Him drunken Ira Hayes he won;t answer any more, not The Indian nor the Marine who went too war

The song in question, "Drums," was on Cash's concept album "Bitter Tears (Ballads of the American Indians)" released in 1964. The song "Drums" was never released as a single from that album, and as a result it wouldn't have received airplay.

"Drums" and four other songs on the album, including "The Ballad of Ira Hayes," were written by folk singer Peter LaFarge, who was American Indian.
