Do you like big crazy solos? or do you think it distracts from the song?!

Question: i personally love them, but i guess that could be because i'm a guitarist myself, and i like to hear how talented the artist really is..... but i only like them if it like actually takes talents to play, not if it's just a series of chords played without vocals (you know what i'm talking about "radio friendly solos")

Solos are awesome and tell you a lot about a guitar player and the dedication to their craft. My opinion on guitar solos come down to if they are tasteful or not.

What I mean by tasteful is did the guitar player use the same 3 notes? Did he copy a string of licks Page used in a solo? Did he throw in every fancy trick he could do just because he could? But most importantly how did his solo refer to the underlying chords.

Scale and note selection is pretty big in my book. I've heard commercial rock bands with 4 note solos in the wrong key or out of tune. But I've also heard guitarists use 1 or 2 notes to do wonders...

But the biggest thing is the relevancy of the solo within a song. If it doesn't sound like it should belong there, then it's just some guitarist doing it because he can.

The solo shows the talent of the guitarists. Fast isn't always best I think melodic playing is better.

I love the solos, Metallica make my favorite solos, I literally wait for the solos in One and master of Puppets.

you can NEVER go wrong with a big crazy solo, unless if it doesn't match the song and just ruins the flow of the song. but i never came across a song like that. look at sweet child o' mine, it has three solo's (sounds like two buts its actually three, one near the begging) in it. and it's one of the best songs i've ever heard.

Solos are great as long as they're melodic. If it's just 40 seconds of thrashing, no thanks.

I love them too, but I also think it is because I am a guitarist myself, When I see a band live I tend to pay more attention to the guitarist than any member of the band, but I have to admit 20 minute guitar solos really do get on my nerves sometimes

I love big crazy solos

The "Wurm" part at the end of "Starship Trooper" by Yes for example absolutely makes that song the Prog Masterpiece it is. It's basically a Guitar & Bass solo form Steve Howe & Chris squire

Yngwie Malmsteen's albums are chock full of big crazy solos and I think they PWN.

I HATE guitar solos....I think the only reason they put one in a song is when they run out of things to say. I like that fact that most of todays rock bands just fill their songs up with words instead!

solos (in my opinion) are most appreciated when performed live in-prov style, sometimes on studio albums i tend to doubt the spontaneity of it and wonder how many 'takes' it took to get that solo down. i still like them, but i think it should be done on the in-prov.

It can detract from the song generally if the guitarist is of the "Van Halen/Yngwie Malmsteen coked up to the eyeballs and not giving a s**t about anybody else in the world" genre. A band should be a band...who needs some twat over-extending themselves?

I love those solos. I find myself getting lost in them more then the lyrics or anything else. But that was only after I started playing. I love it. =]

no not is u listen to Dragonforce....
they have 10 min solos...lol
they ever sec rocks!!!
