Question: i heard it was the dude from the who. but maybe its just him that made it popular, i'm sure that there had to be a handful of people who smashed guitars before him, just that they weren't as popular.

But I'm sure I heard somewhere that it wasn't, and apparently the first time he did it was by accident ~ Roger Daltry says that Pete was doing one of those regular habits of his where he drops the guitar upright to catch when it 'bounces', and one day it just shattered. The audience went wild, so he made it a feature of all future performances.

Actually Pete Townsend of the Who did it first, Jimi Hendrix took it and made it better by lighting the guitar on fire then Pete got mad tried to take it back but couldnt emulate Jimi.
