You might be talking about Jeff Carsons Real Life (Never be the same again)

.I was young, he was old
We both were the same age
Everyday, playing fetch
Shaking hands
He'd lick my face
And I was unaware the day would come
And when he died,
For the first time I knew what real pain was like

Chorus:
And I never was the same again
From that moment on, real life began

Senior high
Girlfriends
Football games
Graduation
Summer break
Spend my time filling out applications
A few superficial years went by
They were all a blur
And in the most unlikely situation,
There you were, yeah

Chorus:
And I never was the same again
From that moment on, real life began
With you, with you

By your side
Scared to death
Felt the pain that you were fighting
Placed my palm on your head
Spoke your name
Just keep trying
And then you closed your eyes
And took one last breath
And when it was over, you looked up
I laid our baby across your breast

Chorus:
And I never was the same again
From that moment on, real life beg

is it "Tough Little Boys" by Gary Allan

I never once, backed down from a punch.
I'd take it square on the chin.
Well I found out fast a bullys just that and you got to stand up to him.
So I didn't cry when I got a black eye as bad as it hurt I just grinned.
But when tough little boys grow up to be Dads
They turn into big babies again.
Scared me to death when took your first steps,
Well I'd fall everytime you fell down.
Your first day of school,
I cried like a fool, I followed your school bus to town.
Well I didn't cry when ol Yeller died
at least not in front of my friends.
But when tough little boys grow up to be
Dads they turn into big babies again.
Well I'm a grown man and as strong as I am.
Well sometimes it's hard to believe,
One little girl with little blonde curls can totally terrify me.
If you were to ask my wife would just laugh ,
she'd say I know all about men,
how tough little boys grow up to be Dads
they turn into big babies again.
Well I know one day I'll give you away
and I'm goin to stand there and smile.
When I get home and I'm all alone,
I'll sit in your room for awhile.
Cause when tough little boys grow up to be
Dads they turn into big babies again

there is an old song called Old Shep--several people have sung it--Elvis Presley, Walter Brennan etc. You can go to Pandora Radio--It is free-you can type in the title of song and see if that is it--they will play entire song if they have it

sounds like "old shep" done by alot of artists...Hank snow, red foley, elvis and others it is a tear jerker for sure

When I was a lad
And old shep was a pup
Over hills and meadows wed stray
Just a boy and his dog
We were both full of fun
We grew up together that way

I remember the time at the old swimmin hold
When I would have drowned beyond doubt
But old shep was right there
To the rescue he came
He jumped in and then pulled me out

As the years fast did roll
Old shep he grew old
His eyes were fast growing dim
And one day the doctor looked at me and said
I can do no more for him jim

With hands that were trembling
I picked up my gun
And aimed it at sheps faithful head
I just couldnt do it
I wanted to run
I wish they would shoot me instead

He came to my side
And looked up at me
And laid his old head on my knee
I had struck the best friend that a man ever had
I cried so I scarcely could see

Old shep he has gone
Where the good doggies go
And no more with old shep will I roam
But if dogs have a heaven
Theres one thing I know
Old shep has a wonderful home

Could it be feed Jake by the Kentucky headhunters

Bugler by the Byrds

Just a guess but it might be

Lotta Man (in that little boy)-----> Craig Morgan
