Maybe I am just too old, but what is this term for modern music known as emo?!
Question: I find the rock/pop section of Answers very compelling, I enjoy reading answers and contributing to the whole process.
That being said, I am 39 years old and have been seeing this term or description "emo" and have no idea what it is. Help me out here everybody.

Hey brother,I'm 38 and I'm tired & emotional of hearing about this emo ****.
I thought some of the **** that filtered through in the '80's was bad until we hit the '90's and that spaz Cobain started whinging & whining about everything and nothing.
As you should know by now,music goes 'round in circles-so C'MON THE '70'S!
its pretty much a slander term used to describe very sad and emotional music. People use it in the offensive way to attempt to insult others. Personally i see everyone as emo because everyone shows some sort of emotion. Happiness is an emotion right?

it's an abbreviation of emotional, apparently that's a music scene/fashion/fad. Much like goth but just with more depression and self mutilation.

It started out as a reference to over emotional kids who do things like dye their hair black and cut themselves. It has become a trend though, sort of like goth. I know becaues Im in high school.
emo is the short for emotional. strong display of emotion. has roots in hardcore and post-punk. well-known emo bands: my chemical romance, fall out boy, panic at the disco, funeral for a friend, the red jumpsuit apparatus.
Most "emos" are gay.
They cut themselves and cry.
The men dress like females.
They listen to really crappy music and they think it's cool.
They all have retarded haircuts.
Some of the bands they like, who also suck are - Flyleaf, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy (don't listen to any of this trash)

Emo is an abbreviation for emotional. Kids today have issues and apparently like to cut themselves. Those kids are known as emo. In some places, they're known as emo punks, 'cuz a lot of their clothing style is similar to the old punk of the past.
Emo originated from the D.C hardcore scene in the early 80's with bands like Embrace, Rites of Spring, Dag Nasty, etc.
Then there was post-indie emo like Jawbreaker, Sunny Day Real Estate and Mineral.
Now there's a so-called third wave with bands like Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, The Used, My Chemical Romance, etc. This is wrong.
Emo is emotionally charged hardcore. Do the bands in paragraph 3 fot that description?
Emo died in the early 90s when Hoover broke up.

what gives you the right to judge emo? what do youa ccomplish by it? why do you make fun of us? and ro once, give me a normal answer istead of ''get a life'' or ''go cry in a corner'' or something. please, im an intelligent person, im not in for stupid discussions. intelligent discussiona re better for me. why do you judge us? why do you beat us up? what gives anyone the right to judge someone for what clothes he/she wears and for what kind of music he/she likes? you dont even knwo me, but when you see me you say : ''hes retarded, beacuase hes an emo. i hate him'' this is onesense. it would be the same as to say ''goths listen to depressing musi. i hate them'' it's just stupid.
