Have you ever had people give you weird looks for listening to what music you li!

Question: Today In the hall at school at lunch with my friends, I had my Ipod connected to speakers and was keeping it low as to not bother anyone. I was just trying to enjoy some Dimmu Borgir until some stupid kids that think it's ok to blast their rap gave me weird looks.

I love this question!

I have gotten the weird looks as well as persecution so many times. People see me as a quiet individual, nerdy to (because I don't have good clothes), and a person that is not crazy and doesn't cause trouble (because they don't know me well, I'm very wild once I open up). But the moment I show any of my friends my music, or anyone else that knows me they see titles of songs on my ipod such as "Child Rape" and they immediately say "omg I didn't know you listened to this type of music! Are you a satanic worshiper?" I say "no" so they immediately try to show me their music, their Emo music or Rap, was never more disguisted in my life of it (lol). Especially if they hear the style of Death and Black Metal vocals (the low grunts of Death Metal, and the screeches from the back of the throat from Black Metal) they are so close minded and they ask "why do you listen to music you cannot understand?" I reply "because I can understand it because I listen to it a lot." Then they immediately say "but thats the devil's music." Oh how ignorant many people are, and close minded.

Now thats the music. Let me get started when I decide to wear a band shirt (rarely, I mostly dress normal). l got a look one time from this one Christian person from school. He immediately stated "TAKE OFF THAT SATANIC SHIRT IN THE NAME OF GOD!" i was wearing a Children of Bodom shirt at the time, since my band shirt collection was low (lol). I'm Christian to, but I'm just a very open minded Christian, I'm intrigued by the dark side of life, the Satanic poetry in some bands etc. Anyways continuing with the story, after I said "no" he tried to get personal with me and tried to take off the band shirt with his own hands by trying to use force. I then punched his stomach, and kicked him again in the stomach, pushed him down, and he didn't do anything, he wasn't beat up though that was just a warning for him to stop. I didn't get suspended though because of self-defense.

*Even the True Metalheads that dress Metal are surprised when I show them my musical tastes for not dressing like one most of the time.

*Personally the funniest thing for me to experience is that because so many Black Metal bands have band logos that are hard to read (the way they design their names), I buy their band shirt. When I go out in public sometimes people ask me "what does that say?" And I just say a lie, or "if you can't read it, too bad!" Lol. They're not going to get the hidden treasures of Underground True Metal very easily are they? They also consider that type of writing Satanic because they think that only devilworshippers and gothic people can understand it.

*But to think about all this. My family persecutes me to, saying that if I wear the shirts they would never talk to me again, as quoted from some of my cousins. Since my family is all Rap fans, and Country. But seriously, if people are going to judge me for my clothes, and not get to know my true personality and accept me for it. Then they aren't worth bonding with for a genuine friendship are they? True friends are there for you, and accept you for who you really are, never want to change you (unless something you're doing is endangering you).

But Metal is a brotherhood. We're there for each other.
STAY METAL \m/

Yeah, there's the odd person that will try to challenge my expertise on AC/DC related matters. And they lose.

I've had that happen, and I hate it! I don't understand why so many people don't respect other people's differences....that's what makes us so unique. It's just sad to be judged because you don't like the same music as them....I try to ignore the ignorant people

Yea Mostly Because Im Black.. And I Listen To Hawthorne Heights, Breaking Benjamin, System of a Down, Three Days Grace, etc.

Yes, for years. You get used to it.

back in the days when I was a kid and started into metal, living in the midwest, long time ago....you have no idea the looks, etc I got and being a female
so yes

Yea we were doing that in the gym. I was listening to "Freak on a Leash" by Korn. And some girl comes up and goes "what the f*** are you listening to" Especially sense everyone here listens to country.... and top 40 hits that have know real meaning behind them

i was jammin to some TDWP in my car once, windows rolled down
and this black family pulls up and just stares at me like i was the devil reincarnate

well....everyone who i tell about my music taste is always surprised.....they say its cause i dont look like a normal hard rock and metal fan....i get it all the time.....i always say its the perfect example of dont judge a book by its cover.....just cause i tend to dress "girly" or w/e...does not mean i have to like a certain kind of music or act a certain kind of way....its really stereotypical...and annoying......lol.....i even had one of my teachers say to me that he couldnt believe "someone like me, would listen to that kind of music".....ahh its so annoying...........
also...come on now....rap is sh it.....they are the ones who should be getting the weird looks.... :)

EDIT: i thought of another example....whenever my cell phone goes off in public ppl just stare...its Dig by Mudvayne...lol..i wanted to pick a song that i loved and would be hard not to hear....lol

not weird looks but mean comments...........im STILL getting used to it

Yeah.

In one incident I was on a plane, listening to Minor Threat. I guess my headphones were little loud.....Dude sitting next to me gave a super dirty filthy look.
I turned down the sound, but dude didn't turn off his ugly stare.

yeah. a lot of people have never heard of the music i listen to, either because its old rock or because its indie-ish.

I like so many different kinds of music and from so many different time periods that people call me weird. I laugh it off and act like it doesn't bug me. Don't let it bother you, you like what you like and no one is going to change that.

yeah when i blast that blessthefall and saosin they hate me.

Yes. Happens all the time since I enjoy mostly Classical and Broadway music. My friends would ask me what I was listening to (because I never blast my speakers anywhere), and when I said 'classical' or 'broadway', they ask "You listen to that stuff?" Completely missing the point that I would also like to ask them how they can enjoy blasting rap music (no offence to those who like rap, this is just personal opinion) when there's no melody to it. Classical I can understand why they give me weird looks (although I think it's very soothing and not boring), but Broadway? It's just sad that people don't understand that everyone has different preferences.

Yes! It annoys the heck out of me!

At the school where I go to, everyone listens to crappy rap music. One day some kid said that Low by Flo Rida was the best song ever. I told him to listen to good music and he looked at me like I was crazy.

Another day I said that the only rap I listen to is Run DMC, and no one had ever heard of them.

And of course, when I said that AC/DC was one the greatest bands ever, everyone thought I was completely crazy.

im like the only person at my school that listens to screamo

Yea, I get weird looks for listening to ROCK music.
Everyone likes Rap and I am SOO not into rap.
I hate it.
Peoples like "Oh who's matchbox twenty" Oh, who's Creed" "Oh, BLAH BLAH BLAH"

I dont see why everyone likes rap.
I mean who would want to listen to something like "I was sittin in da hood and i pulled out my Ak49 he said dont shoot me Im blind"

People are odd these days/

Yeah, everyone hates me because of it.

I mainly listen to music from the 60's 70's and 80's (hence my screen name).
People always ask what my favorite music is, so I tell them things like Cream, Soft Cell, Black Sabbath, The Ramones, David Bowie, etc. and they look at me like I just got punched in the face.

I also don't look like the kind of person that would listen to the bands I love. I seem more of a teen that would listen to My Chemical Romance, or Fall Out Boy, or Panic At The Disco or something (no offense to anyone). I just don't... "Look the part".

I still haven't gotten used to the looks and comments... I just don't understand why people don't like genuine music from those eras. I get really frustrated when they look at me.

If they listen to that crap rap music, why can't I listen to legends? I should give THEM the dirty and mean looks.

Yep, I've gotten weird looks myself.

BTW, that rap sh!t sucks!

most have nothing compared too me lol i live in a small little country town and am in love with rock dress it. act it. listen too it. its also the ONLY thing i will listen too so people just think im crazy lol ive just learned too deal with it and make the most of it being different is kind of funn i actually end up getting compliments on my styles alot lol

Yeah,it's mainly because they've either never heard of any of the bands I listen to or because I'm not a sell out like them and don't have any pop bullshit on my ipod.

Me and this other kid in my Organic Chem class were talking about Celtic Frost and and these kids around us keep telling us to "listen to real music". And they haven't even heard of of their songs yet.
My phone has speakers on it, so over the summer in my College Prep class, me, my friend and a professor would blast some Stones, floyd, Styx and Boston loud and a lot of kids gave me odd looks. Maybe cause I was rocking with our teacher, LOL. But people do call me a old dinsour for my music tatse.

Of course this wil always happen. I listen to rock and when you find out the source its not that they don't like it but they don't understand it. If they really listen they might like it!

I've never really gotten weird looks, People just think I'm kind of weird. I guess it's because I'm an innocent looking black chick who listens to death metal. My sister sticks up for Soulja Boy while bashing my musical choices. The nerve!!

Yes! I like all genres of music- so I have a very wide and diverse CD collection. It ranges from 70's- 2008 music. The music includes rock, soft and hard, metal, country, rap and hip-hop and top 40 and some I probably didn't think to list. Most people listen to one form of music, but mine is so vast- most do not know where I am coming from. I just love all music and can fit in to any crowd or any crowd could fit into me. :)

Ha, for sure.
See, my favorite band is Queen.
So many times people have asked me who my fave is, and I tell them Queen. They then say, "Oh! I love them! What's your favorite song?"
I'll say something like, "Well, it fluctuates, but one of my all-time favorites is "Don't Stop Me Now."
They always look at me like, "Uhh.....what?"
That's when I go, "Do you know anything other than Bo Rhap, We Will Rock You, Another One Bites The Dust and We aRe The Champions?"
And they go "....no."

God, that conversation annoys me.

Also, people are always surprised when I'm listening to my mp3 player, and they ask what I'm listening to and I answer,
"Jesus Christ Superstar, it's a Rock Opera Musical",
especially since by blood I'm Jewish and by choice I'm Atheist.

i guess so. most people assume i'm ditzy and stupid and i just listen to the radio and watch the hills on mtv. some people are surprised i actually have a taste in music at all (whether or not they consider my taste to be "good").

damn those stereotypes. :P

hell yeah, the girls at svhool because of thei "hip hop" thinking ways

Yes it happens to me also

All the time. I remember this one time me, my boss and a co worker had to drive to 2 hours from where I live to handle some business after the wildfires we had a couple of months ago. So as I was driving, my boss decided to grab my Ipod that I had connected to the stereo and the first song that came out was Suffocation - Jesus Wept, so my boss and my co-worker were like,"What is this, Satanic music?" And they were surprised that they really thought as me as a person who listens to mellow music since I am a quiet person, polite and professional at work, and they told me why I didn't fit the profile of a drunken, long haired crazy person. And I jokingly told him, that I only do this on the weekend or when I am bored.
