johnny cash recorded it but sunday morning coming down was his best wrote song. I dont know about what he recorded himself.
I really liked the work he did with The Highwaymen in the 80s.

Sunday Morning Coming Down is his all time best song. He has recorded it himself, though I perfer Johnny Cash's version the best. He released and album in 2004 that has over 35 great songs. They include Darby's Castle, If You Dont Like Hank Williams, Me and Bobby McGee, Help Me Make It Through The Night, and Loving Her Was Easier.
His biggest success and best songs go back to the eighties when he paired up with Barbra Streisand in "A Star Is Born" because the sound track sales were huge and the movie is outstanding.
He has so many. My favorite though (I think anyways) is The Pilgrim, Chapter 33 from the Austin Sessions. That whole album is great though...you should check it out.

Sunday Morning Coming Down was his masterpiece even though he didn't record it. Johnny Cash did. I still think it's his best song.
