What is the difference between a noise gate and a compressor?!

Question: I'm recording music and I need a compressor. I'm wondering if a noise gate is similar to a compressor. I also have an option on adobe audition that is called "normalize" is this anything like a compressor?

Ok, here goes- A compressor is an device for reducing the range of dynamics of an audio signal. Use this to boost the quiet bits and reduce the loud bits. A noise-gate cuts out audio signals below a dB threshold selected by the engineer. An example of this would be to remove bleed from in between words on a vocal take, ie; making the silent bits properly silent. Normalizing will adjust the level of your audio so that the highest peak is at the maximum recording level (pre-distortion).

So, you can set a compressor to normalize, but you can't compress with a normalizer. Hope this helps! x
