Proper proper emo people wear the long leather ones. The scene kids or the alternative lot which are often refered to as emos wear big hoodies with band names on or just anything not very chavvy!

Wear a longsleeve sweater underneath a real thick hoodie, fur on the inside, and I assure you, you will be good to go, make sure hoodie is black, maybe a skull on the front, you a female, so maybe the classic female look with a heart and crossbones? Hope that helps, I have an emo friend.
P.S. No such thing as a preppy emo, emos and preps just don't get along, and a style mix...not a good thing, go either prep, emo, or punk, but none mixed. Just some advice.

Iuno why, but girls like they Baby Phat type coats with the fur around the collar.
I see a lot of wool coats. And those are warm.
Try colored wool 3/4 coats, if not shorter.
