How do you mix a rapper?!

Question: After recording the main vocals and then ad-libs, what is a good way to go about mixing a rapper? i.e. panning, effects, compression

Mix the vocals so they settle into the mix. It kind of depends on how good the rapper is. Is he consistent with his delivery, or is he all over the place volume wise. Compression should be used sparingly, however it is a useful tool for bringing up the quieter frequencies in someones voice. I use compression on everything I do, but not very much of it. Set the threshold high. Panning wise you can do several things, this depends on the artist though. You can dual mono the recording and record the same take twice, and pan one performance hard left and the other hard right. Other than that most vocals are just placed right in the center or maybe slightly off center. Just listen and see what sounds best this is what will give you the best result.

take aim, squeeze (don't pull) , then he/she will be mixed all over the room just like they should be

um... what

Erasing, then adding a different vocalist's track with melodies.

Well.....if you mix a rapper with a country singer..you'd get a 'crapper'.
