Honestly I think it's the fans that define them. When the little girls are swooning over them that's what makes them a boy band. The obessive fans, yep, that's my answer.
EXAMPLE: OMG Gerard is soooooooo way hawt!!!! I LLLLoooooooVVVVVEEEE HiM@! H3 SaV3D mY LyF!!
EXAMPLE 2: OMG I loooovvveee what Pete did with his eyeliner at that show last night... how do I do that???

a boy band is a group of young handsome boys that can sing and dance but have the song writing skills of a monkey. other people write crappy songs for them and then the one that is most adored by the females goes solo and the rest squander in anonymity.

These are not boy bands.

Here are some boy bands:
NSYNC
98 Degrees
Backstreet Boys

They are usually young guys who sing together and dont play any instruments...

Usually, the term boy band is associated with bands that consist of guys in pop music...

98 Degrees, NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, mostly from the 90's

the ones you mentioned are more rock based bands, which is why they wouldn't be referred to as boy bands.

A band like Boys like Girls.
The lyrics are the same in every song.
Depends on looks.
Fan base consist of 9 year old girls to 14 year old girls.

That's my definition of boy band!

Flashy clothing, lots of help from the synth, lack of ingenuity and talent, and a swooning fanbase of twelve-year-old girls.

Take 5 Teenage Boys that make Teenage girls drool

Add synthetic pop lyrics

Add choregraphed dance moves

Add a ruthless, greedy manager

Add massive corporate overhype and tons of airplay.

Result: N'Sync BSB NKOTB...aka "Boy Band"

The only real difference between them and MCR FOB PATD & The JB is instruments.

To me, a boy band is a group of boys who just sing and don't really play any instruments.

MCR, FOB and P!ATD play instruments but they don't play them well...

Based on the ones from my time :

Take That
East 17
Boyzone

a 'Boy Band' is a group of boys in their late teens - early twenties, who sing pop songs ~ often written for them, don't play instruments {though the first two on my list each had a member who played piano, and they wrote several of their own songs}, and perform huge stage shows which mainly involve them 'dancing'.

And for some reason, not only do they usually have a fanbase of pre-teen and early teens girls, but also of those girls mothers!

Boy bands thrived in the 90's. Boy band are younger and they sing like girls, with harmonies and such.

A bunch of ponses and w@nkers who cannot sing, who
cannot play instruments and who don't write their own songs

Hmmm...Boys would be the logical answer....

I agree with the people above...5 boys that are smokin hott...that couldnt write a song to save their lives....And you named my fav bands lol

Well its a group of
all gay looking men
singing really gay songs
trying to get really stupid
teenage girls to swoon over
them but they dont really care
because there all gay.

Boy Bands capture the minds and hearts of young girls ..with their dreamboy looks , their frilly dances , and there " i love you for life " aura... lol just my perception

Easy. Back in the early days, these acts consisted of very boyish looking dudes who lacked discernible music talent. After all, the goal was about image and ending up on the wall of a fourteen year old girl’s bedroom. They appeared to be the product of record labels, looking to cash in on the latest trend. The thing they all had in common was regurgitated blue-eyed soul and/or synth pop, no guitars and a relatively harmless clean-cut appearance.

That all changed today. We have a new mutant strain of the boy band and it goes by the term emo. The only real differences consist of the music and its musicians "pretending" to be dark, they incorporate a little more guitar and the bands are older than the teenagers of yesteryear. But make no mistake; all those acronym garbage bands are indeed boy bands tailored for modern times. And they suck even worse than their predecessors because unlike The Backstreet Boys, they take themselves seriously as if they’re rock.

1. Must have 5 members (all boys of course)
2. Being able to lip-sync is a must
3. Incredibly cheesy music videos are a must
4. Being featured on the cover of Teen People every week
5. Must have someone else to write boring, predictable, cliche lyrics for you.
6. No one in the "band" should know how to play an instrument.
7. None of the members knew each other before the record label put them together.
8. Must not put out more than 3 successful albums, after that people are supposed to stop caring.
9. Upon the band's breakup, 2 members must attempt a solo career.
10. Another 2 members must attempt acting and fail miserably.

When a group of boys come together in a group and sing about childish issues and attract all the girls under the age of 17, they become a boy band.

To me a boy band is a group of young boys that take the innocent/naive teenage girls of the world by storm with their flashy dance moves/choreography, whiny lyrics...and false fabricated persona. Once they hit puberty, grow a few whiskers...get busted for drugs, and evevtualy get married their careers are over. Then they wind up on reality TV shows, or become destined for the 'Where Are They Now' world of late night TV programming.
That to me is a 'Boy Band'.

typically when I hear the term "boy band" I think of groups (not bands) like N*Sync and backstreet boys... basically any group consisting of boys (under 18), pretty (perfect hair, skin whatever) and trendyish clothes that a girl would pick out for them... I'm not a huge fan of MCR so I'm not sure- they do play their own music right? like an actual band? even though they're all guys, don't ask me why, but I would not consider them a "boy band" but just a band... Not sure if it's just me or not but that's my opinion.

Boy bands r like preppy, pop singing bands, with all guys. A perfect example of a boy band is backstreet boys or n'sync

A whole bunch of gay men forming a band, look at NSYNC for example, they are all gay...

i'd have to disagree with you, although i'm not exactly a fan of any of those, i wouldn't consider them boy bands. here's my criteria for a boy band:
high voices that sound like 14 year olds
don't play any instruments (there could be exceptions though)
they dance (this takes the place of instruments)
they wear matching outfits
they are signed by disney of something like that
they have the words "brother" or "boys" or something like that in their name
lip syncing
you don't write your own songs
your skin is perfect and your hair is bleached blonde

here's bands i consider boy bands:
jonas brothers
n*snyc
backstreet boys
the click five
other bands like that

- Must consist of at least 5 members
- A majority of the members must be minors (under 18) at time of inception
- Members must be homosexual, whether in the closet or not
- Members must be willing to suck corporate c**k and sell out in any way possible to promote their crap through mainstream media
- Total lack of true talent

Stools...they gotta have the high stools.

Teen-boy-pop band that practices dance moves to do in music videos and in stage performances. They all suck at singing, so they try to cover it up with cheezy dancing.

PS. Panic! At the Disco is NOT a boy band! I wuv them. You make me sad :(
