Break this down by percentage... what makes a great track to you? 100% lyrics? 1!

Question: for me its 60% beat... 40% lyrics. I'm a little embarassed to say this.

You all may blast me on this, but I just can't listen to you (no matter how unbelievable the lyrics) if the beat is terrible.

At the same time, I can tolerate bad lyrics if the beat is hot enough (my example of this is Jeezy).

What is your breakdown?

Good beats is the thing thats getting wack lyrics by...Thats the motto of the NEW ERA hip hop listener...I Believe it should be 50-50...But more then anything when it comes to rap...real heads what lyrics. But I think a classic is made when things are evenly matched.

HILARIOUS!
Jeezy has the worst lyrics ever.
"Patty cake Patty cake. Microwave. Circle Meets a Square GD I'm paid" hahah
I MUST have an awesome baseline and some claps.
Then the lyrics.
So, 80% beat. 20% lyrics.

about the same as you...60%-40%

I'd say mine is about 50-50...but I dont always base "lyrics" on who has the hardest punchlines and metaphores... more if it sounds good and I feel what dudes sayin.

I feel you on that...bad production has killed some seriously lyrical dudes...ras kass and canibus to name a couple...bad lyrics you can zone out and just listen to the music...for me it depends on the setting though, at a party->80% beats...through my headphones->80% lyrics

I'd say about 60% lyrics, 40% beats

My example: Canibus...his first few albums were only good albums because of the lyricism on behalf on Canibus...and even though the beats sucked, I still somewhat like those albums.

No you got a point. I love a good beat, i dont think it can completely save a song with terrible lyrics...but it does help. I used to only listen to the beat when i was younger but now i try to listen to lyrics as well. I still think that there is a reason for songs like Soulja Boy (to have fun with) but i dont think it should be put in the same category as people like Talib Kweli or Lupe Fiasco. I think I'm gona agree with you 60% beat 40% lyrics.

im more 75% lyrics 20% beat and 5% flow cuz i know plenty of ppl who got sum sick lyrics but there flow suck nd ruins the song

To me the lyrics don't really matter and I consider the voice as part of the music. There are some songs with terrible words with great music and beats that people could care less about the actual lyrics.

For asimo, its 100% lyrics and 100% beat.
how can that be possible? i can hear you screaming.
well...i judge each in two seperate percentage rating groups ensuring that every track i have is tha bomb.

I see aint none of yall on dat real hip hop. You cant answer tha queston with percentages. The beat can be nuthin w/o words or it could be a strait banger by its self. Same gose for the lyrics. It goes both ways ....... Asimo kno wat it is tho

80% lyrics 20% beat

I need the beat to be INTENSE kind of like some of Tupac's and Eminem's songs..

Same as you 60%beat 40% lyrics.. if you ain't got hot beats you better be a hell of a great mc....or else you can hang it especially if you plan to make profit in the industry

Jeezy and Gucci mane are prefect examples

It kinda depends on what mood I'm in. For my average day its about 75 pecernt lyrics 25 beat, but I have acceptions. I can listen to a good accapella or an instrumental and they are polar opposites. I also have to say that lyrics are not always just complex ones, but what moves me. So yeah I'm all over the map.

When I was younger it probably didn't matter too much how top notch the lyrics were but now if the lyrics aren't tight I don't rate a track. Seriously make an instrumental LP if the rapper on it sucks.
70% Lyrics 30%Beat but if the beat is not so good
85% Lyrics.
In saying that you know it's a Gem if both are over 3/4 good.

I like Jeezy. Anyway, 70% Lyrics, 30% Beat.

JEEZY? WTF? I agree with the first response!

JEEZY? ya'll are insane! WTF..

JEEZY??? im sorry, but i find that incredible.. jeezy has no talent whatsoever.. how about lupe, kanye, nas, jay-z, mos def, common, or a tribe called quest?

c'mon folks.. get it together.

Has to be 60 percent beat, 40 percent lyrics.

I can't listen to a garbage beat and great lyrics like Rakim or KRS One.

I can't listen to great beats and awful lyrics like Soulja Boy.

A good sound is a must though, so I give the beat a little edge.

Dre is an example of this 60 40.

Immortal Technique is 90 100

well it depends...... 99% of the time its 85% lyrics and 15% beat
but every once in a while (bout 1%) i slip up listento the radio and catch myself likin some other wise wack azz song this happened last week with that song im not sure who its by but it go like this "dey no, dey no" of course its from some one from down south and through the whole song he says nothing but its the beat of that song
but that doesnt happen too much im hard on hip hop/ rap now bcuz i grew up when hip hop was a moving force in the community not a new dance craze i wish solja boy would SUPERMAN hiz azz off the empirer state bldg or the sears tower and take gucci mane and hurricane chris wit him!!!!!!!!!!
